Dremel WorkStation (stand)
on: April 06, 2015, 03:09:31 PM
I bought a Dremel WorkStation a few of years ago.  I intended to use it for woodworking.  I was disappointed in the flexing of the stand due to the plastic parts.  I now use a drill press for most uses and the DWS has been gathering dust.  Does anyone use the stand for multitool modding?  I may have to drag it out and try using it again for grinding or such purposes when I need a third hand.

I didn't even know they made a stand but it looks awesome.

Where does it flex? The only peice that looks plastic is the peice the holds the dremel and swivels/moves up and down.

Most of the parts on the central portion are plastic (blue, grey and black colors).  There are metal bolts, metal shafts and most of the hardware holding it together are metal parts.  The cup that holds the dremel tool is a hard plastic.

I'm going to try using it again.  I don't remember exactly what I was using it for initially, but I remember I stopped using it because of the flexing and it was difficult to keep it aligned straight as a drill press function.

It's unfortunate that it bends that badly. I small press like that is something I could easily get away with using at the kitchen table instead of the garage :D

I was interested in these some time ago when I realized it's tough to have a workshop here.

I wonder if the knockoffs/offbrand are any better quality?

I mean, I don't expect it to be as good as a precision fullsize setup, but at least decent for minor projects?
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I have a proxxon ibs/e and its stand. the stand is all metal, quite precise.
in the reviews of the dremel one they were complaining about the precision, or lack thereof. the proxxon doesn't seem to be affected by that, or by just a smaller amount.

proxxon tools are pricey, even in europe, but you feel their solidity when you handle them.

now I just need to put it to use...

I've actually been disappointed with Dremel's accessories.  I have the plunge router attachment, and it's unusable.  The depth gauge is only on one side, and the other side will wedge up and down.  Useless as a small router.

Of course, there is something a Dremel can do and nothing else can, and that's cut a big slot in a wallered out screw head.  For that purpose, a dremel is worth it's weight in gold.
