That's a spartan Puuko that feels great at hand and cuts like hell.

It is actually a Leuku (traditional Sami knife) :)

A big Lapinleuku? Even better.

Nice one Joe

I always thought Puukko means small knife in Finnish

I guess that explains why my wife's nickname for me is "Puukko".  ???

In some languages I’m told it means 'Big Chopper'

Thats another thread ruined

Good thing! I was afraid that comment was gonna get left alone.

Does my Helle Symfoni knife count as a Puukko?  Wrong country but the right idea I think. ;)

(Image removed from quote.)

It is at least a Tollekniv.  :)
I think that what we Norwegians call a Tollekniv is roughly the same as a Finn would call a Puukko. But Im not sure.

Nice little utility leuku. ;)

Puukko here most often mean knife that is used for anything. blade length and style vary by region and manufacturer.

Joe58 knife is designed by Pekka Tuominen www.puukkopekka.com, and by my means can be called puukko. It has blade and handle looking little similar that Tommi puukko has (yet one regional puukko here).

At better time, i will post few links here. And talk more about puukkos.

On the topic of "meanings", I still have my first puuko which is made by Iisakki Jarvenpaa. According to their website, the model still exists and is a Jätkänvuolu. Does this translate as anything? One online translator said I translates as "Lynx" and another said something like "Moving forward five ways".....not exactly consistent  ::) I figured if I ask here, I might get a more reliable answer  :D

I would transalate "jätkänvuolu" as "Lumberjacks's whittler/whittling (knife)". Online translators are all but useless when translating Finnish to other languages and almost as useless when translating other languages to Finnish, myself I always translate languages foreign to me to English, much more understandable :D

Little something about Leuku. They usually are from 15 cm up to 40cm long and about 4cm wide all around choppers. Mostly they are used cutting branches and splitting wood. It is compared to billhook, but has little wider range of use, like cutting bones of animals that are hunted.

Smaller than 15 cm long and blade 2,5 cm wide are clumsy not so good at anythin,  and they are more concidered as tourist leukus. Mostly because it does not cut wood that good, or you can chop anything because it is so light.

Leuku is regional knife that originates at Lapland, reaching northern parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway. Those parts Leuku is called Stuorra Niibas, and is allways companied by smaller puukko Unna Niibas.

What i have used Stuorra Niibas, i see that kkokkolis has exellent size user on his hands.

Assuming 50ft doesn't change his mind, I've got this pair on the way to me:

Does the Wood Jewel fit your criteria for a Leuku Crow?  You're not going to change my mind about buying it, I'm just curious as to what you think. :)

Absolutely it does. Wood Jewel makes some very nice looking Puukkos and Leukus. What i know of it, blades are are made by Laurin Metalli at Kauhava. They seem to make most blades for many smaller manufacturer. Very nice and cheap utility puukko called Finman is made by them.

When you ask Sami people of their sharps, they only accept ones that are made by their known village smiths.

Edit: blade manufacturers name corrected

Did we ever decide what pattern this one was? It's from Norway IIRC.

I remember this one. Shape of blade and handle are similar to leuku. Blade grind and size not so much. Maybe Grathr could tell it by that info that was found...

I have a no2 sized mora with the same blade shape, but I am not sure what the pattern is called.

I really should get a book about norwegian knives.

I have visited Finland with a couple of buddies a few years ago. Unfortunately I somehow managed to not buy any knives. We where in Helsinki the whole time, and we where not exactly sober most of the time, so that might have something to do with it... We had a great time though :D

And I might just take you up on that offer. :)

so, do these count ? I had to google the meaning of puukko :) - we bought these a good 15 or 16 years ago during a trip to Finland

I had to go looking for them and see that one of the blades has some staining/rust - any suggestions how to clean it without ruining it ?

Yes, those are one of biggest puukko manufacturers model Ilves puukkos. Very good in quality and great in use. Rust comes off with good oil and a rag. Those carbon bladed ones should be stored in light oil.
