Hey, all! New to the site (been lurking for a few months) and thought I'd share what I thought was an oddity.

Picked up a black PST only to find it's definitely not black oxide. I actually thought for sure it was more like a DLC (mostly because the shiny grain from the steel can still be seen). Came across this post in researching it and was super surprised they made PST in DLC!

I haven't gone back through the whole thread, but I think the combination of elements in this one may be relevant for the project?

It's DLC, but no date stamps, no metric on the ruler, and the smaller lettering. So it would definitely be prior to 92 right? Maybe even prior to 90?

Pictured on the left, next to a BO:

I'm pretty stoked--I thought I was just picking up a normal BO PST for a decent price.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but it could just be pocket worn BO which can shine up a bit.

Welcome - And yes please start a new thread and maybe give a few more details on specifically what you are looking for

As I'm sure you know the Skeletool has a carabiner attachment capability - which can hook onto belt or pack loops etc etc
- So presumably you are looking for something different to that?  ???

Serrated Knife 80's PST Japan

so i have this PST.

looks like it was made in the 80's in Japan.

REG’D TM 1325473 Large letters Title, serrated Knife (tang stamped Leatherman Japan). Rivets(not bolts).

NEVER SEEN ANY PST LIKE THAT WITH SERRATED KNIFE

the serrated knife is clearly factory made, the serrations are different than PST II(way more aggressive and deep).

does some one have any info? how rare this is? or a link

That's the only one I've ever seen. It's possible that someone with great sharpening skills did that but anything is possible I suppose.

Great first post. Welcome to the forum

Wow never seen that blade before - Where is wowbaro?

I think the awl tip is broken off - the end looks a little ragged

It is quite obvious that both the serrator and the rest of the sharpening of the blade are homemade, perhaps with the use of special equipment, but this is not LM factory production.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I believe a previous owner tried to repair or modify the awl. The grinds look very uneven to me. Whatever the case, a very cool JPST! :tu:

This looks very interesting to me.  From my experience in metalworking and manufacturing, this looks much more like a prototype than a modification. The nail nicks on the other tools are all large, like on the blade, and the hollow grinding on the back of the awl would be very difficult to produce without specialized equipment.  The uneveness of the grind on the back of the awl would testify to the fact that this is a prototype, not part of a production run.

Very cool knife! It would be interesting to find out from someone at Leatherman if there are any records of such a prototype.

This is clearly a modification as stated by wowoboro.  Leatherman, and especially Japanese craftsmanship, would be much higher in my opinion.  This looks sloppy.

Agreed Sir, the work is sloppy by production standards.  Your own impressive collection of PSTs and your cataloging of minute production differentiations in your book makes you an authority with extensive knowledge of the PST. However, I think you would agree that Tim Leatherman's own prototypes were quite sloppy by production standards.  The low quality would indicate to me that this is either a prototype, or an early attempted counterfeit.  I simply think the likelihood of a prototype is higher.  Particularly with the Leatherman tang stamping, and the fact that the later production PST II did in fact have a combo blade. Just my thoughts of course.
