Some people love them, some people hate them, and some people are middle of the road. What do you really think of Multis?

I would personally be lost without the help of my Wave in my pocket!! :multi: :salute:

I would feel uneasy leaving the house without a full size multi now after carrying for a few years.  Even around the house I've got a SAK on me.

I don't know how "regular" people do their thing all day without some kind of tool with them...

I'dd definately be buried with a multitool :salute: :D

I love multis simply because I LOATHE being out, needing some tool and not having it available. I'm just as likely to leave my pants home as a multitool. Even when going into buildings where knives are forbidden, rest assured one of my MTs will be with me. My carry pack always has my Bear Jaws and I carry the Tool of the Day.

I absolutely love them.

That said,

Tool for  tool, if I took every implement found of the SURGE!!!, and bought that implement separately, and bought the toughest, strongest version of that implement I could find, I am sure that the stand along implement would beat that same implement found on a multi tool every time. However, I would also need a tool chest to carry it all in, and it would cost a lot more than a SURGE. Now, for 95% of jobs, nothing beats the convenience, portability, time savings and cost-effectiveness of carrying a MT. Every tool has a breaking point, and the breaking point for a MT is not the highest on the chart, sadly. Even the Swisstool can be defeated if you really tried. If I'm going to be sitting through a work day attaching connectors to cable, I'm going to get the proper tools. If I'm doing just one or two, my MT can handle it just fine. Don't get me wrong, I love my mutli tool, and now that I'm used to living with one it will never leave my side. Every tool has a limit, a Core can do more than a Juice. It's always about the right tool for the day or the job. People are always going to expect more from a tool that it can give. I know just how much my tools can take, and that is what I expect from them. I expect to get what I pay for. The Suspension is crap and the Wave is a beautiful piece of engineering, and at $30, the Guppie is a steal.

So, that's my true feelings on MT's. Please don't hurt me.

I like multi-tools, and use do use them. However, I have a small toolbox that I keep in my truck which has everything a fully loaded multi has and lots, lots more. I also have nearly the same setup in my "briefcase", it's more of a soft case. But I do keep multi's and SAK's in both the truck and my soft case too. Normally, I reach for the stand alone tool as it's easier to use and just better. Now, when I'm out on the property I carry a multi and a SAK, they keep me from wasting my time running to my garage for a stand alone tool for simple things.

Now, I also carry at least two SAK's on me ..... Fieldmaster and Rambler on my keychain. I get lots of use out both of those, more than my multi's.

So, in a rather long winded way I'd say multi's are great by themselves for simple things or in conjunction with other tools.

I think multitools are going to change drastically over the next 10 years. The plier based design was a great innovation, but I think it is hitting its limits now. I anticipate a lot of drastically different ideas to come in the near future. I don't think the plier model will vanish entirely though, I just think people will start to think of additional possibilities,

A gripe I have with multitools in general is the redundancy. I don't really want a single multitool that does everything anymore. Instead, I want 2-3 specialized tools that work together as a set and are portable.

A very simplified example of what I mean are the wrench and ratchet add-ons for the SwissTool and Spirit. I don't really want my bit driver on my pliers anyway. What if I need to use the pliers to hold a nut on the back at the same time?

As well, I don't need multiple can openers. How about a Spirit designed to compliment a SAK with no redundant tools? Or how about a Crunch specifically designed to compliment a Wave?

Finally, I would like more modularity, like the replaceable Surge file/saw, and customization, like with SOG tools.

ive had multitools continuously for a bit over 15 years.
at first when i saw add´s of these thingys that costa a half months paycheck,i was a bit against them and fought mentally not no buy one since"i have agood sak and loads of tools and pliers, theres no use for gadget like that".
but temptation grew and i went out and bought myself a PST,and ever since ive been hooked to these.
i really really dont go out of the door ever without somekind of multi, ever again.hell,i have one at home, next to me too almost all the time, when im watching tv,being a nerd in front of pc,etc.and as long as i live i bet i will be using multitools a lot.the first thing i take along or pack with me when i go somewhere,is always a multi.
