need help "one handing" a Ranger Gardner 71
on: April 17, 2015, 03:13:08 PM
I'd like to swap a one hand opening blade like I have on my Ranger 79 into my 71 Gardner.

Alternatively, have someone install a one sided thumb stud so as not to interfere with the adjacent scissors.

Alternatively to that, maybe an epoxy thumb stud like this:

Can anyone assist?
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

Nobody

  • provides SAK modification services for compensation?
  • knows anybody who provides SAK modification services for compensation?
  • wants to comment to someone outside of some mystical magical unspoken SAK "clique"?

1. Try syph (7 out of 10 ladies think he is better than nothing)

2. Try a  "buck 110 thumb stud" search which may work with your knife too

No
No
Yes.  It's over here. ;)

It's probably more due to the relative scarcity of Wenger and more specifically the larger Ranger knife mods.  I'm sure it's not that hard and that it's already been done, somewhere...

Funny story.  My frist year of residence at university was in an 11 story building of 550 students.  It used to be an all female dorm, but my year they let in 10% guys as a test. I dont know how I got in, but I must have done something right somewhere in my life.

Oh right SAKs.  No Ive never taken the big wengers apart, Ive only taken the scales off and they ahve some funny looking steel bushing rivet thing on there, so Its not something Id want to tackle without ruining my own knives first.

I will take the gamble of the ruination of my Ranger 79 if there is confidence my 71 Gardner will result in being a one hander.  I understand the cost of new scales will likely be involved.

I can give it a shot.  Best case is the blades are not too hard of a swap and only that one rivet needs to be removed.  The scales shouldnt be damaged at all.  Gently heating them allows them to be removed without damage.

Buck decided to let me have a go at modding these wengers for him and do the blade swap.  They are both currently apart and I will take some pics as I do the re-assemble for the curious and just to document the internals of a big ranger with scissors as its the first for me.

What I noticed so far.

1.  No way is it possible to just remove one rivet on these and swap a tool like can be done on a 91.  Those springs on these big boy SAK are STRONG!
2.  These are the Delemont versions and all use 2.5mm pin stock with all standard bushings the normal 2.5mm pins uses on 91s.  THANK YOU VIC
3.  Like the other Wenger models, one side of the pin has a formed bushing, and the other side has a normal bushing that is slipped on an rivetted.

Pics to follow in a few hours.

Cheers

ooooooo

Would like to see this done to put a one hand straight blade on a Rangergrip 74 (and the Philips instead of the corkscrew)... good luck Syph! (though you probably don't need it with dorm luck like that...).

Here are the pieces to go together for the 71.  The only tool change is for the OHO main blade.  Think there is enough liners in a 3 layer SAK?

Note the brass bushing in the scissors layer, and 3 backsprings for that tool.  The scissors are awesome though.

Those springs are super heavy duty!

Here are the rest of the build up pics.

The only  on these models are... THE BLOODY BUSHINGS ARE DIFFERENT SIZES ON FRONT AND BACK!!!

Why!?!?!?!?!  The front scale has smaller bushings then the back scale on the same pivot... just weird.  So I had to gently expand the holes of the front scale so it would snap on.

So, any Delemont RangerGrip could have the scale properly carved in order to have a functional hex bit driver?
