Just a couple of pic's that may interest some of you.

The outline of Australia (including Tasmania, aren't I good?) overlayed on Europe and the continental USA.

Lots of beach front properties!  It amazes me to consider the population density of AU.

I hate to be the fly in the ointment here, but has the projection been compensated for?
From the map projection you have used, Norway is very large compared to the rest og europe, wich means that australia also is unnaturaly large as its so far south, if the same projection is used.

Edit:
Looking at the numbers the projection is probably wrong:
USA is 9,8 million km2
Europe is 10 million km2
Australia is: 7,6 million km2

Australia is still smurfing huge, just not that huge :)

Good point.
Does your figure for USA include Alaska? (or Hawaii?)

The following two primary sources (non-mirrored) represent the range (min./max.) of total area for China and the United States. Both sources exclude Taiwan from the area of China.
The Encyclopædia Britannica lists China as world's third-largest country (after Russia and Canada) with a total area of 9,572,900 sq km,[4] and the U.S. as fourth-largest at 9,526,468 sq km. The figure for the U.S. is less than in the CIA Factbook because it excludes Coastal and Territorial waters.[5]
The CIA World Factbook lists the United States as the third-largest country (after Russia and Canada) with total area of 9,826,675 sq km,[6] and China as fourth-largest at 9,596,961 sq km.[7] This figure for the U.S. is greater than in the Encyclopædia Britannica because it includes Coastal and Territorial waters.

Canada has 9 984 000 sq km
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

There's probably one out there somewhere for Australia:

Ive done a bit of checking around and these pics seem to be correct including projection compensation. On a sphere the projection should be 1:1 for everything

Australia- a bloody big place!

I guess one thing to remember is that compared to CONUS a large percentage of our landmass is desert. Hence why the bulk of the population is situated where it is.

these were both from snapshots taken from google earth.  didn't change the scale, just spun the globe.
Took a third snap of Australia and did an outline trace.

If Google Earth presents an accurate representation of a globe then these are all to scale.

here's the google earth view of Australia.
Basically, you can live in about HALF of the green bit.

In the rest of it (unless you are tough as a boot) if the land don't kill you, the critters will.

If the crocodiles or snakes don't get you, the mice will…

If you look at the pic I put up, Straya would probably be over Egypt so no wonder.

Surprisingly - given the  population density - Australia has the most urbanised population on the planet (I read somewhere once!)
Something like 70% of the population live in 8 cities / urban conurbations
And something like 90% (probably more) live within 100k of the sea.

As you can see from PTR's photo !!

Another statistic. 20% of New Zealanders live within 100km of the coast... of Australia

Straya must be overcrowded though - I mean look at all those boat people they turn away and send to Nauru.

I'd post a video of some of the ones who were turned away and you'd see why, but I won't violate MTO rules regarding political topics.

But if you Google "immigrants turned back" and look at the first video result, that's your free choice.

If you look at the pic I put up, Straya would probably be over Egypt so no wonder.

Most of the world's deserts lie in two bands centered around 30* north and south of the equator. Caused in part by Hadley cell circulation in the atmosphere. Basically warm moisture-laden air rises from the tropics, cools and drops its moisture content, and then the descending dry high-pressure air helps form deserts. Cold west coast ocean currents also add to the effect. In the southern hemisphere the Atacama, Kalahari and Australian deserts are the result.
