The Wave is a terrific MT and is pocket friendly, the Surge IMO is not.  The Surge has more than a "step up" in scissors over the Wave/Spirit in my experience.
The Swisstool has a great pair of scissors and 91mm SAK scissors are very good.  The Wave file is not much different than the Surge file and I dare say almost identical.  That said if you dislike the Wave file then the Surge one is sure to disappoint.
Lets say you like the Wave file then the Surge file is superior for a couple of reasons, 1) if you need to sharpen your main blade or awl you can simply take out the file and do so, 2) you can replace the file if you damage of wear down.

I agree on the detachable file.
But one major disappoint ment for me is that you can not have the file and wood saw together on the tool.
As i pocket carry the tool i can not carry a spare part.
That is one reason i like the Swisstool and Supertool. No detachable parts all fixed screw drivers.

If the Swisstool had leatherman style needle nose pliers and a pocket clip it would be my ultimate MT.

Yes this is the case.  As always there are some gives and takes  :( .  The plastic sheath that comes with the Surge is pretty thin, can it go into a wallet?  What about shrink tube the blade and keychain carry?  Just trying to think out the box  :pok:

Not only are the Surge's scissors better, they are way more accessible than the Wave/Charge.  I use scissors everyday whereas both file and saw are once-in-a-blue-moon tools.

For me there are exactly 2 significant things better about the Wave/Charge over the Surge:

  • size/weight
  • eyeglass driver bit holder
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

Could someone make a photo comparison between the wave and surge, not really with the tools but with the overall size, especially the thickness. Is the surge much thicker than the wave? The Swisstool is thinner than the wave.

I took some pics of the surge and wave. Sorry for the not so good quality of the pictures, I used the camera of my cellphone.

We all know that the surge compared with the wave is:

larger

bigger

and yes, heavier

There is an eyeglass bit on the old version Surge.

Thanks for the pics, but i am pretty sure the surge is just to big. I think my Swisstool is much slimmer and has the same functions.

I like my wave, but i also like the Swisstool x.

I received my Swisstool in the mail last week because it came back from warranty.
But i do have to say i am really tempted to go back to the Swisstool.
If only i could make the pocket clip fit.
I have a solution. Tig weld the pocket clip to the Swisstool, they are both stainless steel, i don't know of they will weld that good. Are there expiriencrd welders here that might have an idea.
I could also try 2 component automotive glue. But i don't know how well that will hold up.

The Swisstool is slimmer than both Wave and Surge.  It also packs more implements than both.  I really like the Swisstool, as far as a pocket clip I believe Kam used some strong tape with a niteize clip IIRC  for one of his tools.

I dont think welding is a good idea IMO just in case you need to send it in again.

I could always grind it of, but agree it is not a great idea. if it is some strange mix of metals and you'l burn a hole in it the tool is ruined. you'l only have one chance

ill try the automotive glue. or just without pocket clip. i already carried it without the clip for a year. but after getting the wave with pocket clip i also like that so the tool doesnt dissapear in the deep seas of your pocket.

Victorinox warranty was great, the tool had welding spots all over it but they havent rejected it. they have also paid the 70 euros for shipping to switzerland and back to the netherlands. This is also a reason why i really like my swisstool. they support there product so well.

I also like the fact that it was hand built and has no quailty imperfections whatsoever.
Also the sentimental fact kicks in. I've carried this one the most of all my mt's.
The Swisstool actualy has less physical body space. So in diamensions it is smaller than the wave altough it is a  centimeter longer.

Why are MT manufactuers always giving me such a hard time :ahhh

It's funny how some people get carried away with their VSA stuff on Leatherman forum, isn't it?  8)
EDC and OCD. A wicked mix.

There's always more about the Victoria's Secret multitools in the Leatherman forum than in the Swiss Army Knights forum.

With the negativity about the Surge needle nose plier tips I wondered how much actual bolt/nut turning do you do?

If I'm turning a bolt/nut I'm grasping it with the side of the tool regardless if I'm using "real" pliers or not so for all intent and purpose having the needle nose can be an added feature.

Having replaceable and might I add re-workable cutters is a big plus.  Mash the cutters on whatever tool doesn't have them.

OHO is a great convenience, I was reaching behind a cabinet to try an free something when I realized it was twine that had got caught on the shelf.  I was using one hand to stabilize myself ( think yoga position ) the other was able to reach for my MT and open the blade to make the needed cut.

Carrying a few accessories for the Surge is about the same a carrying a SAK to supplement the MT of your choice.  Almost all of us carry a SAK and MT so why the gripe about accessories?

How much tip usage do pliers really see?  Most of what I turn is done from the side of my MT.  Yes I think blunt nose option is a great idea but does having NN really render this tool worthless?

It gets more and more obvious that choosing the right tool for you and your environment is critical.

I think you've hit the nail on the head right here. Whether or not a specific multitool is useful to you really comes down to what you do and more specifically what you plan on doing with that multitool. It's the reason why you see so many mixed opinions on whether a multi is good or not. The discussion here about blunt nose pliers is a good example of that.

The Surge is effectively a heavy duty version of the Wave. The primary benefit of which translates into a bigger and beefier set of pliers and wire cutters. This may or may not benefit you, depending on what work you will do with it. As an example, if you work in an industry where you have to cut and manipulate lots of heavy gauge wire, such as the fencing or construction industry, then this tool makes life easier for you.

From the basic information in your posts, it sounds like you work in the IT industry, and do basic maintenance around the house. If this is the case, then from personal experience I can see why may not be not happy with the Surge - there is nothing really that it will offer that is of any benefit over the Wave.

The Wave has a skinnier set of pliers more suited to tasks that need more precision that you sometimes find in IT. And for those rare situations where you find yourself having to deal with stronger steel than the soft cheap stuff you normally find in the IT industry, the Wave will actually deal with it, it would just take a bit more effort than it would with the Surge.

So to recap. I love my Surge for it's ability to cut and bend heavy gauge fencing wire that's wound itself around the blades of a slasher after I've run over a 30 year old fence that's hidden in long grass. For being able to pry old U nails out of fence posts that my real set of snub nose fencing pliers can't do. For being able to cut the grass away from around a fence post before fixing animal proof fencing wire to it.
