Leatherman (New) Surge eyeglass screwdriver mod
on: April 28, 2015, 06:45:20 PM
Hello everyone !

My first post, my first mod, I hope you will find it usefull !

The pictures speak for themselves:

First, Dremel is yout best friend, make sure to use the thinnest disk, so the gap fits perfectly the narrow part of the eyeglass screwdriver.
Then, clean all the part, center everything, and use some superglue or soldering:

[edit]: for "deeper reaching", you can use only half of the center part; as you can see on other pictures, the center part goes at least 4mm beyond the holding tool of the Surge.

And voilà  :drink: :

Also:

If you find a way to improve it, please tell me  :tu:

Welcome to the forum. :waving:

Interesting way of approaching the problem.

So far there was also a solution to simply melt some lead around the micro screwdriver bit and adapt it to fit the bit driver.

Great !

Also found these different ideas:

For the "lazy" ;)
But does not hold well the tool to my opinion:

Better for reaching deeper screws:

Great idea, but needs sanctifying a Wave or old Surge:

Here is what I do:

The Victorinox Micro Screwdriver fits into the LM card

Newer Vic Micro Screwdriver fit perfectly into standard 1/4" holders

Much more elegant than my first attempt which was to epoxy encapsulate a small hex precision driver but I was influenced by my ex-Wave precision driver not being very precisely formed.

Clever idea, KmiKzee.  What size cutting wheel did you use?  Does it fit tight or is it loose before the glue or solder?

Regarding the Vic driver, it seems like one could grind or file the sides flat to fit the standard bit driver.
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

There is no filing required, the Vic driver has already a hex-shaped head made to fit standard 1/4" socket*. So it would be quite easy to file it down, so it fits the LM-bit-holder without the need for the extender.

*Unless you have an older one, they used to be round. More info here from Caranthanus

I'm not sure, but I think it's the regular cutting disk from Dremel.
It's a little bit narrower than the eyeglass screwdriver, so I had to enlarge the gap to make it fit perfectly => the glue/solder is just there to hold the 2 parts together, not to transmit any torque.

My only problem with this screwdriver is that if I take my glasses off to tighten the screw, I can’t see the screw!!

I recently saw these on Facebook and went straight to Amazon and bought a couple ::)

They are well made and fit the micro driver bits very well :woohoo:

It enables them to be use in the large bit driver or in any of the adapters just as you would use any of the regular flat bits

Hills Adventure sells them for anyone curious  :salute: and a few pics

got linked over here from a different thread, 3d printing makes something like this easy, 7 minute print for 2, but it needs some refinement i don't have time to devote right now.
might be hard to tell but it is shaped just like the bit with the 6 sides and the indent. I modified this off a thing on thingiverse that allowed adding an exacto to the bit holder
