Remember to tell people where you are going!
on: May 15, 2015, 02:29:14 PM
On tuesday morning I got some sad news from my mom.
A childhood friend and former classmate i had not seen in years, had died during the weekend on a camping trip with his friends.
He had left camp before the others had woken up and gone for a walk or jog.

When his mates woke up they had no idea where he was. They started to search for him, and after a few hours without finding him, they called the police, who called the red cross and sivil defence and started a search.
They found him after 24 hours in a lake.
From the evidence he had probably had an accident and had fallen into the freezing water and drowned.

It probably happened very fast, and had they known where he had gone, they probably would not have been able to save him. But they might have.
And just maybe, if he had told someone, one of them might have joined him, and he might have been still alive today.

Either way, had he told someone where he went, they would have found him faster.

Remember to tell someone where you are going!
If smurf hits the fan, that will save you a lot faster than any survival kit ever will.

I couldn't agree with this more.  Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Sorry to hear about your friend. :(

I think most people know to leave word of where they are going hiking with folks at home, but telling the people you are with on the hike with that you are going to be out of sight might not be so obvious.

Sorry to hear about the news bud.

IMO going on jogs and walks in environments you aren't accustomed too should never be done alone. There's a real reason for the "buddy system" in scouts and I can't stand that adults don't have to follow the same rule. (In scouts anyways)

He could of easily left a note saying what he was doing and a general idea of location he would travel and time he would be back.

Sadly most people would not do this. I know I have personally been on camping trips and woken up before everyone else and went out on my own and never left any note or told anyone. I probably won't do that again though.

Good to hear Capt you will be revising your thoughts.  I am a very early riser and when camping I tend to stay close to camp.  I love to wander in the quite of the woods but I'l typically make coffee and nudge someone awake to join me.

Terrible news.  Something most folks don't think about, for some going for a morning jog is as routine as brushing their teeth so his subconscious didn't set off any red flags because it was a reflex action.  Sorry for the loss of your friend, it's a true tragedy especially given the circumstances.

Sorry to hear.

I can see myself getting into a situation like this, hopefully not so terminal.
I'm someone who values "alone time" and have to admit I'm notorious for not informing people where/when I'm going and will be back.

Sorry to hear this Grathr.

I bought a book from our Mountain Safety Council and they also gave me a pad of intentions forms. On each one you fill in your trip details, expected return date etc and give it to someone reliable. Also there are now online intenions services (we have one called Adventuresmart).

Sorry to hear about your old friend, it just shows the importance of telling someone or leaving a note as to your whereabouts and a time when you should be home.

I'm another of the same mind Peter. I've also found that:

A) I forget to inform people I have got back safe

B) telling people I'm going off somewhere on my own gets them agitated, so I don't like telling them in the first place.

Truly sorry to hear about your friend, but I'm not sure I will change my ways. I would however inform people if I foresaw any risks which I thought may be significant (weather warnings or other identifyable hazards)

I reckon it is especially important to inform somebody if your spending time in or around a body of water. Drowning is something that happens far too often and usually can be prevented with a little care and fore thought. We must respect the water people!

It's not just in case something happens to you either. In NZ we have had PLENTY of cases where people (usually tourists) have not let others know they got back OK. Search teams have gone into the mountains, risking their own lives to find people who have in fact since returned and gone to another part of the country.

Very true. It would be terrible if a search and rescuer got injured or worse because no one knew you made it back safely.

Definately do that, especially if Geocaching and especially if alone.
I was two weeks ago in the bottom of a well in the middle of nowhere, and last week in the middle of the Rabies quarantine area of the bear reserve, 6 hours from any human contact. No proper phone signal in either. If something would have happened nobody would find me in years...
