Happy international No Diet day
on: May 06, 2015, 09:56:10 AM
Yes, it is today and you probably were not aware of it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_No_Diet_Day

International No Diet Day (INDD) is an annual celebration of body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity. This day is also dedicated to promoting a healthy life style with a focus on health at any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success; the Institute of Medicine summarises: "those who complete weight loss programs lose approximately 10 percent of their body weight only to regain two-thirds within a year and almost all of it within five years."[1] The first International No Diet Day was celebrated in the UK in 1992. Feminist groups in other countries around the globe have started to celebrate International No Diet Day, especially in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, Denmark and Brazil.
Since 1998 both the International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) and the National Organisation for Women (NOW) have sponsored similar days. ISAA's day is the International Size Acceptance Day which is celebrated on 24 April.[2] NOW organises a Love Your Body campaign, with its own annual Love Your Body Day in the fall,[3] which critiques what it defines as "fake Images" of the fashion, beauty and diet industries demanding that images of women with diverse body sizes and shapes are used instead.[4]
International No Diet Day is observed on May 6, and its symbol is a light blue ribbon.

Loool, no, i didn't know about this indeed :D But today here it's St. George Day and the typical dish is roasted lamb, so ... it's kinda no-diet day by default, lol

While I agree that dieting is a waste, only change of lifestyle can bring the desired effect. This is kinda ridiculous:
[...]fat acceptance[...]This day is also dedicated to promoting a healthy life style with a focus on health at any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success[...]
Fact is, dieting done right is totally harmless, being fat (and I mean not just a bit overweight but being obese) is never harmless...

Also:
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Well, yeah, btw, as far as I know, obesity is always related to diabetes at one point or another, high blood pressure... and difficulties moving. To be honest, I'm far from obese, but I'm a bit overweight and have always been and like most women, I've always been worried about my damn weight and inability to lose some. Of course, it's not really.... inability, it's most probably me not doing it right and living a sedentary life style.

So, although this kind of day sounds fun... I'm really not a supporter of ... being obese. I mean, it's not even that much about the looks. if you like yourself, great, if your loved ones love you... great. As long as you're young, this may not be a problem, but a lot of people tend to put on even more weight with age and things may get worse later in time.

I've always been somewhere around 69kg (my slimmest period) - 80kg (my fattest period) which is not thaaaaat much for my height - 173cm and as I was working a lot at one point, I may have more muscle mass than the average woman at my age... BUT it's far not the best and I've always struggled to keep my weight in the ... lower 70s, so to speak. Maybe it's something wrong with me, but if I ate as much as I wanted and as often as I wanted, I'd be really fat. Which not only wouldn't I like for myself, but it would also be unhealthy and last but not least, related to lots of expenses, because I'd need new clothes, lol.

Nice one dks  :salute:

I'm all for the pressure being taken off women to look a certain way - Unfortunately one way to stop yourself feeling unhappy is to buy something, so what do you know, the media does it's best to make us feel.....unhappy.

I think it's shameful the way the fashion and 'beauty' industries actively denigrate women. It sets up an impossible ideal for women to live up to.

Obviously there is a danger in actually being obese for all genders, no one is arguing about that, but in our societies nowadays where we are seen only as consumers, the drive from big companies is that we consume no matter what. Comfort food, then diet food, exercise equipment, new clothes, new toys, holidays, all designed to make us feel better about ourselves.

We are all different and I for one am glad about that - I wish we lived in a world where we were helped to feel good about ourselves, but then happy people don't buy much....

Rant over! Happy no diet day everybody.

Yeah, weight and height are not all there is to it:

For men, belt size is a pretty good measure if you want to loose fat by exercising.

What I am going to say I know is politically incorrect, but I don't care.

I think it is a stupid initiative that is negative for health.

Be fit is not only a question of aesthetics but of health.
Nevertheless I would always prefer a body in shaphe that the badly call curvies, who are really obess.

If you eat properly and DO EXERCISE at a level that your metabolism burn the excess you get slimmer.

I don't believe in any excuses.

In war prisioner camps there wasn't obesity, it is cruel but is the truth.

If you want a healthier and longer life eat properly and do exercise.

Now I can be banned if you want

What it has to be altered is the way of life.
Less sedentarity and more self control to not overeat.
In bad moments of life I don't increase my body weight.
No excuses.

But what about those who don't know any better? For example parents constantly buying takeaways for their kids.

A prisoner In a POW camps tends to experience malnutrition, starvation and possibly death, irrespective of his or her awareness of their correct nutritional needs.  The simple fact that they are deprived of food ensures that they will lose weight, but this could hardly be described as a healthy eating regime.

Adult obesity, beyond the simple fact of excessive eating or eating unhealthy foods, can have a variety of origins.  It might be comfortable to think that the principle causes of obesity are a combination of greed and lack of self-restraint, however this is simply not the case.

ANYWAY, Happy Body Positive Day

Live how you've gotta, if you get a say in how you die, more power to you, enjoy the bits in between.
