Who dun it?
on: July 30, 2008, 05:33:54 AM
You know what I mean. That little part of the instruction manual of all SAKs where you go, "Hah, that's stupid. Only stupid people would do that."

Then you do.

In my case I picked up my tinker with the blade the wrong way, wasn't looking, tried to make a puncture with it...
And it went back right into my index finger. Split my nail almost all the way down. Not too horrible, still hurt though.

Hurt my pride, that is. I is one of them stupid people now.

So, who dun it?

EDIT: I was cutting open a tennis ball to put on the ends of furniture as flooring protection, for you sadists out there. =(

Ow!  :o   Hope its healing OK.

It's always the little 58mm SAKs that get me.  They're just too damn small and I fumble them  >:(
I've now retired my edc Rambler and replaced it with a modded 74mm.  Much safer!

I sliced my thumb open with a razor sharp SwissTool RS blade and didn't even know it. Not until a few minutes later, when I started following a trail of blood drops across the floor, did I realize it was ME who was bleeding. :P
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Those innocent looking, diminutive Vic Tinkers have drawn my blood more than a few times in 20+ years of EDC - far more than any other knife.

Last year a brand new small Tinker sliced into my index finger, but the cut was so clean that I wasn't aware of it for several minutes.  Bled a fair amount before I noticed the blood on my shirt and realized what I'd done.

Guess I tend to exercise just a little less caution when handling a Tinker, compared to handling bigger folding knives.  Maybe familiarity breeds contempt?

The majority of the cuts I have gotten from knives have been in the kitchen, usually while chopping vegetables.

Lately I use 2 knives to do that, from opposite directions, or using one of them to hold the veggies while cutting with the other.
That has substantially reduced the instances of cutting myself instead of the veggies and gets the job done faster.

I'm an accident waiting to happen with knives.

Fortunately

A. I always carry tape.

B. Chicks dig scars.

I remember dropping a SAK once with the blade open and instinctively tried to catch it.

I learned a lot from that.

Nowadays if I drop an open knife , not very often, I just stand back, so it doesn't catch my toes.

I tend to require stitches after cleaning my MTs and knives. :D

It's a shame blood isn't a better lubricant and rust preventative. Maybe if I was Star Trek's Mr. Data or the Terminator!

Whenever I practice a little bit of knife throwing from the closer range I instinctively try to catch them when they rebound.

Good thing throwing knives still serve their purpose dull eh?
I've still cut and punctured myself that way a few times though...

Best thing I ever did was catch a soldiering iron rolling off the table. Yup, took about 2 months for the entire pad of my thumb to fully heal.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

I have suffered little whilst using knives (taught well, I'd like to thank the leader of my Scout troop for this). However, it sometimes seems that during the cleaning of newly restored blades they each demand a little bit of me before the job is done.

This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact I already own some kevlar gloves.  Do I ever wear them?
