Le Belge was a steam locomotive with tender, built in 1835 by the company founded by John Cockerill in Seraing, Belgium. It was the first steam railway locomotive built in Belgium, and was built under license to a design by Robert Stephenson & Co.

The locomotive was built for the first main line on the European mainland, the Brussels-Mechelen line.

Thanks for the comments!

A couple of notes to the #8 high ball photo - First, #8 was about an hour and a half late getting into Milwaukee, and was making up time in this section. At the time he screamed thru Oconomowoc he was doing a good 80 MPH which is the track max for this area -- here to Duplainville.

Watching the ATCS, the westbound oil can had parked at Cooney West, and there was another one waiting at Nashotah for him to pass. Those are the only two passing tracks in this area - the next one was where I found him when I called Julie, Amtraks automated agent, wondering where #8 was - he just left his last station stop before heading east at Columbus - 5 minutes before -- and was indeed, making time!

That umbrella shed is a left over from the days when trains used to stop here - the bricks should go all the way over to the tracks. This is the old Milwaukee Road main line from Chicago to La Crosse, and this is the Watertown Sub Division. It used to be two tracks all the way but when the CP took it over they made a lot of the sections single track, with passing tracks about every 15 miles.

From Chicago to Duplainville west it double tracked, the next one west is Nashotah. This is two miles long. Next west is Cooney West another two mile long passing track - then into Watertown and thru the Mud Lake wildlife area - a five mile long passing track and then into Columbus -- from there to Portage where the Sub ends.

Just a little local color and information.

The photo below is my train chase set up - on the seat is the ATCS on the computer and my scanner with w 3/5 cut antenna on top. ATCS allows one to follow trains by reading the signals. It will tell you where trains are and where they are parked. You need to belong to the Yahoo group and be a subscriber to this service and have your own WIFI for it to work.

Okay, here is a rare photo of Amtrak 507. I wasn't exactly expecting this unit, as I was set up to shoot one like I did last time, and was expecting a toaster not this unit.

Now you're talking! I miss my years working at the railroad, some of the best days of my life. I come from a family of railroaders and absolutely love trains :tu:

2. I live next to the railway, so I can see and hear trains every fifteen or thirty minutes, lol.

That reminds of that scene in The Blues Brothers where Jack comes back to his brother's apartment after getting out of jail. The tracks run right outside the window and when the trains come by it shakes the building so badly everybody is coughing up dust. Jake turns to Elwood and says "How often does that happen?" so Elwood says "So often you won't even notice it..."

Anyone interested in the Mt Washington cog railroad should check out Mt Pilatus, near Luzern, Switzerland.

Coming up the front side is one of the longest cable car routes in existence. Going down the backside is the world's steepest cog railroad, 46*.

This is a nice one too but in fall sometimes not very scenic with all the trees bare

http://www.cograilway.com/

The wikipedia page claims the max grade is 48 degrees on this one.

According to this the Pikes Peak cog railroad has a maximum grade of around 25%; the Mt Pilatus around 48%.

Haven't made it up Pikes Peak yet; on the to-do list. Have done the Durango- Silverton and the Georgetown Loop RRs here in Colorado.

Another good one is the Grand Canyon Railway that leaves out of Williams, Arizona. No steep grades but a very nice experience.

G'Day,

Took some pics of unused trains in Cooma, New South Wales, Australia. Currently awaiting funds to restore the rail and signalling system to get some old original trains running again. Sad to see the Ozzie rail heritage not being fully preserved.

The last picture is of the Sky Tube going to Perisher Ski Resort.

Cheers,

Pete

I was passing through a small town yesterday and saw some people standing near the tracks.
Strange, not only because it was raining but there didn't seem to be an accident or problem.
Ten seconds down the road I spotted smoke behind the trees.
I slammed on the brakes, told dog to stay, grabbed the camera and started running.
Trying to keep the camera dry, jumping the irrigation drain, zigzagging the trees.
I pressed the button before I had come to a stop, it was that close.
Okay, so it's not the best pic, but it was fun getting it.

For those interested, the Steam Incorporated site has more infomation on the Ab608.

Quote
