Hiker vs Tinker
on: May 12, 2015, 03:59:55 PM
Personally, I like the Hiker because of the addition of a wood saw on the Hiker, and the extra thickness is outweighed by it, in my opinion.

What do you think of the Hiker youselves? Love it/Hate it?  :)

Love it! But then I love the wood saw. Originally I carried a Huntsman, and used parts of it together with a Swisschamp to make my Woodsman which is my EDC now.

Out of the parts left over I made a Hiker with 3 sets of back tools; Cork screw, Awl and Fine Screwdriver.

I get quite a lot of use from the saw while out walking in the woods.

Any pics?
When you talk about the fine screwdriver, do you mean the corkscrew one?

I would go with a Super Tinker before a Hiker. Same with Yeoman and Passenger. Three layers SAKs are sweet.

Is that because of the scissors?
Personally, I wont carry the Hiker in public(thanks to the irish knife laws  ), so in the house or out camping/hiking, the saw would be better for me, I think.

P.S My Hiker is still in the post, and I have never owned a SAK or Multitool before.
I made my choice carefully though, and I feel attached to it before it has even gotten in my hands.   :D

Yes, scissors and inline phillips. I think you will be happy with the Hiker. The saw is pretty fun.

Really can't go wrong with the basic Tinker then add what you'd like.  The Vic saw is very capable for me tho I prefer the Camper vs Hiker for the corkscrew.

I prefer the Tinker over the Hiker as I just don't use the saw that often and it disappears in my pocket.  Pliers or scissors are much more useful, so Super Tinker or Mechanic for me if you're sticking with 3 layers.

Nice. I presume that it is the back tool between the corkscrew and awl?
How does it compare to the removable corkscrew version?

I wonder whats the difference, pocket-wise, between 2 and 3 layers?

Thanks all.  :)

I prefer the removable corkscrew driver and only added the back tool one because it wasd there - I wouldn't trust it with much torque.

I wouldn't say there's that much difference between 2 and 3 layers - I carry my 2 layer Wenger SI for Wenger Wednesdays, and the 3 layer Hiker sometimes. It depends on carry method. I suspend mine from a lanyard attached to my belt to they dangle in my pocket rather than sit at the bottom, but sometimes I'll belt carry in a pouch. How would you carry yours?

I bought a pouch, I might use it.
On the other hand, attaching the hiker to a lanyard, and the lanyard to a clip on the pocket with some sort of slip knot or lasso kind of knot sounds good too.
I might even carry it lose.  ;)
I need to have the SAK in my pocket to decide.  ::)

I wonder if kind of trousers would have an effect. The SAK might not jingle around and be so annoying in tighter trousers? It would stay in place because of friction.

If your trousers are too tight people may get the wrong idea when they see your SAK.

Lol!
I'll try out a breast pocket or an inside coat pocket too.
If there is a bulge, most people will assume that it could be something like a pair of glasses? Might be more comfortable and accessable too.  :)

I'm thinking of getting either of these two as they're currently available in my place. Did you find the saw useful since you bought the Hiker?

Wow, this thread has lots of memories.  :D
I no longer carry a Hiker, but a bigger SAK.
It's a bladeless woodsman, 4 layers thick.
And whenever I think of slimming it down, eliminating the saw never is never considered as a serious option.

Even though I use the saw once a week, or once a fortnight, it is very useful when I need it, and I like using it.

My mindset is that my bladeless woodsman is the only 91mm SAK that I EDC regularly, so it should have all the tools I MIGHT need, and the tools I like.
It's nearly as thick as a 5 layer ranger, due to the thick scissors and magnifying glass layers, pretty much the largest I want to carry daily.
A nice companion for a Rambler and a plier tool with no saw or scissors.

Basically, I like the saw, and it is very useful when I need it, and you should get a SAK with a saw to try it out, if you don't already have one.
If you never use it, go for a slimmer SAK if you like. And a recommendation, the MTO store would be a cheap way to get a Camper(has saw).

By the way, I don't like the backside Philips on the Hiker or Tinker, and much prefer the corkscrew like on a Spartan or Camper, and inline Philips if I really need/want it, like on an Explorer. But that's just my preference.  :)

Thanks, Pablo! Helpful insight. I would like to buy from the MTO store except the shipping is very expensive to my country. Right now, I'm limited to the Tinker and Hiker and I'm thinking the Hiker offers a better value for me as the price difference is very negligible. Also, that saw might come in handy if its the only tool I have with me.

Thanks again!

I'm on it: the back-layer phillips is more useful until you actually need to use a phillips.

TBH, I never warmed up to the aesthetics of a corkscrew. Its "cleaner" or "smoother" to look at a folded Philips. purely personal opinion here   :-[

I hear you.  The funny thing is all the surveys we do here shows about dead even choice between the two, but in practice in my custom orders very very rarely do people wan the corkscrew.  Probably 5% of the time.

I have both, and prefer the Hiker.  I find the difference in thickness negligible, and the  saw is super handy for more serious work.  The saw can do things that would require a hatchet in the outdoors, and do it more cleanly.  It is also handy during home improvement projects.

Ohh that thought does bring me back some memories...
I admit i thought the same for quite some time, and still do in some way, but to a much lesser degree.
These days i'm pretty much split between the corkscrew and the Phillips as far as feel and look. The Phillips still has the edge with me as far as actual usefulness as a tool but only for very light torque and occasional SD use. It's not that i love that Philips for his terrible usefulness in that position, but much more for the aesthetics and smoothness and less bulk in the pocket.
The corkscrew despite being more bulky does give it that lovely classic look, and while less smooth on the hand, it does help to grip the Sak much better in some uses, and it holds the micro SD too...  :D

So i would say in my case it's a 55% (Ph) vs 45%(Cs)....  :drink:

Between the Tinker and the Hiker, i love both and also carried both for long periods of time. The difference in thickness is negligible, but the wood saw is usually not terribly useful in a urban regular edc environment (a scissors is way more...), so it all depends of what you need, and your uses.

Both are great sak's, but right as far as 2 layers go i'm firmly on the 84mm camp  :salute:
