(Off) center drill?
on: May 14, 2015, 02:43:23 PM
Would like advice from those with machining experience and can answer this with certainty.  Is this an optical illusion due to the twist or is this center drill severely off center?  It is a cheap Harbor Freight center drill.  I originally got it for simple tasks at home for soft materials where tolerances is not critical.  Using it to disassemble SAKs and I seem to have occasional difficulties.  Problems include some drifting and difficulty penetrating hard materials.

The Flues give the optical illusion.
I'm no expert, but landing area looks noon existent to me, maybe this type didn't have one. In trade school they snapped bits in half and made everyone sharpen both ends. Best drilling bits I found had a visible landing area between inclusive angles.
This may be normal here, but if it turns out useless at some point, flatten very tip a wee little bit and test again.
Interesting though.
Mike

Have a great day.

If it's off center you should be able to visualize when its spinning.  If it wobbles or the tip is not rotating along center axis as its turning, it will be pretty obvious.

If you are cutting hard materiels, its probably dull already if its cheap.  I only use those for removing rivets, brass and nickel silver.
