1985 Duracell Durabeam.
on: May 16, 2015, 09:36:01 PM
With the help of NKlamerus I once again own a flashlight I remember using as a child. I have always had memories of this light and once Lynn started her thread about her personally flashlight history it brought back memories and the search was on. I had to identify the light before anything. All I remembered was what it looked like. After some searching I found it on a sakwiki like page for flashlights. Did some Fleabay searching but nothing available, but within a few days one came up in great condition and in working order. Again, with NKlamerus's help I bought it.
It arrived today! First thing I noticed is the sound of metal floating around on the inside. I was a bit worried to be honest. I opened it up to see this.

Alright, nothing crazy, but I had no idea if this piece broke off or what was going on. After staring at it for about 45 seconds I realized it could only go in one place for the flashlight to function.

Just in case anyone is interested how this light works here is a quick explanation. As you can see in this picture there is two separate pieces of metal. When you install the "bottom" battery it makes the first connection.

In the last picture you will notice the other piece of metal that is just shy of touching. When you move the plastic ON switch forward a little notch pushes down on the notch on the metal piece completing the (circuit?). Sorry, not sure what to call it. I'm no electrician.

Simple as that. I love that it works. I'm not going to be using it or anything, but still nice. Here is just some random shots of the light. You notice the top mounted ON/OFF switch. I never thought about it until now, but maybe this is one reason why I love the button position on the Zebralight. It was ingrained in me as a kid.

And last but not least the beam shot. I'm sure its what you have all been waiting for.  ::)  It is incredible how far we have come in flashlight technology and technology in general. Here is what we were working with in 1985.

Great hot spot and incredibly even spill.........

The beam pattern is........ interesting.  :D It looks better than it performs, but  I knew that already. I wonder the possibility of getting another and converting it to a LED with some power behind it?

Another just came available, but it is in rough shape and almost double what I paid. I am seriously considering collecting just this model.

One of theses wouldn't work, would it? https://www.niteize.com/product/LED-Upgrade-Kit-C-D-CELL.asp

If the size was correct than possibly. I'm not real sure though.  Thanks for the link. Might come in handy if I can get another Durabeam for cheap.

Something very cool happened. I spoke with my father and sent him a picture of the flashlight to see if he remembered it and giving it to me. He told me not only does he remember it he knows exactly where it is and has even used it a few times in the last year.  :o It is on its way to me and I will soon have my original light back! I thought it was long gone and had no idea he had it so it was a very pleasant surprise.

Excellent thread Cap  :salute: I love the first few pics explaining the circuit - so simple!

It's also a nice looking torch. Do you have any pics next to a SAK or something for scale?

Nice ending too with your dad sending you your original  :tu:

Cheers Cap  :salute: The torch has a great vintage look to it and will be brilliant with an led bulb. As you will have a spare will you EDC this one?

Well I'm sick in the head so I do not see it as having a spare. I will have the original light. Then the light that is in excellent condition that I do not want to use or put the LED in. So I really need to find another that I will use and put the LED bulb in. I know, I'm insane.
