Dog sent possum up tree.

I climbed up to check out it's sleeping hole.

Note the ripped up bark on the right from it's claws.

Thanks mate.   I've just started posting pics in a larger size. Should I stick with them or go back to the smaller size?

Not sure Zman. I am using my phone right now, I will take a look when I find a PC. But as far as I can with my phone, I would say stick with the bigger pics.

The forum automatically resizes pics anyway, so feel free to post whatever you like.  :D

I hope the possum didn't take offense to you peeking around it's home.  If it's anything like the possums I've met over the years, they really don't appreciate it when you call their bluff.

I remember one of my college room mates got a whole semester of forced vacation because he thought messing around with a Possum was a good idea.

I always thought they played dead for our protection more than theirs....

All my pics link back to my flickr and because I don't take high level pics I think small ones hide the quality better.
It bugs me when people post massive pics too, you can't see the small one well so you click it and boom it's a billboard and you have to scroll forever.

After it tried to piss on me it crossed to a bigger Pine and went skyward.
Possums are quite habitual, they tend to eat and sleep at the same places until they have to move on.
Chances are if I go back there now it'll be asleep in that hollow.
And yes they can be vicious little smurfs.
One of my dogs had his tongue opened up by a claw and it bleed a scary amount.

Lots of very sharp teeth. The couple I've seen had no interest in playing dead.

Our possums are a little different to the North American critter.

Horrid Australian import , real pest, pretty much swerve to hit in New Zealand, protected in Australia.
Too bad we can't ship them back

Unfortunately this is fairly typical of an animal (or plant) that is OK in its home location but a real pest when taken somewhere else.  Some Oz versions are the cane toad and feral cats (both wreaking havoc in our natural environment).

What are similar problems in other countries ?  (ie not Oz or NZ)

Yeah, talking about introduced pests in NZ would require it's own forum.

We had a few possums living in trees in our yard, one of them got in a fight with our staffy. Didn't end too well for the possum! Since then the others have moved on...

The possums in NZ may once have been the same as here in Aus, but they seem to have grown bigger there. Must be the abundance of food and the colder climate or something.
I certainly wouldn't try this with a Kiwi wild possum.
