Thanks Barry, they weren't the fanciest SAK made but I kind of like them.  Most don't even have T&T and even that's kind of nice.  This one fell into my lap with a more modern Explorer for $25 so I'm not whining.  😛

You definitely can't beat the price!  A lot of people get the early Woodsman confused with the Huntsman.  Almost identical except the T/T on the Huntsman and not the Woodsman.

And no LNF either.  Kind of a poor man's Huntsman. 😜

Another nice old 91mm Woodsman from the 60's joins the family.  Pre-magnifier/Phillips and all that good stuff......
Top two (both 84mm and 91mm) are from the 40's/50's, next two from the 60's, next two from the 70's and the bottom (91mm only) from the 80's with the magnifier/Phillips.

Nice line-up indeed!!!
That really is impressive - All Woodsmen - Correct ???
First the older 'Huntsman' version - Then the new Explorer plus saw version

Very nice and lots of the old ones which I love!

.... You need to get one of those Alox Woodsmen to complete the set !!

PS. I think Vic need to make a 111mm and 58mm Woodsman etc etc - Then we can have a Woodsman for each frame size !!  ;)

Huntsman....yes, all Woodsmen.  The only one that doesn't completely fit the "profile" is the 40's/50's 91mm because of the T&T, but it doesn't have the LNF so I'm calling it a Woodsman.  Probably wouldn't be able to prove one way or the other so that's my story and I'm sticking to it.  😛

58mm Woodsman......I like it!!

Just love these "Owners Group" topics!

As you may have observed, they repeat the cycle of falling off the latest page only to be revived at some point. This topic popped up just after I discovered a Woodsman hiding out with my Explorers. Although I have followed several e-bay auctions featuring the Woodsman, I had forgotten that I had actually purchased one. The very large initials on a very worn set of scales caught my attention, causing me to wonder how such unsightly scales hadn't been replaced. I checked out the tools and discovered that they were all in good shape with good snap. While checking for snap, I discovered the saw and it dawned on me that I did purchase a Woodsman and just stuck it in with my Explorers. I have already removed the scales and will give it a thorough cleaning tomorrow. After the cleaning, I will assess what looks like some scratches on both knife blades and most likely will be giving them a progressive sanding and apply some polishing compound with my Dremel.  Hopefully, the final buffing will yield blades that look new.

I prefer to start with SAKs in new or excellent shape but one of my two Grand Prix purchases had badly blemished and scratches blades. I did my usual cleaning but the blemishes remained. A cycle in the dishwasher didn't yield any better results (talk about denial, scratches don't go away with a bath). Finally, sanding with progressively finer sand paper (in this case 400 grit through 2500 grit) followed by polishing compound buffing with my Dremel restored the blades to a mirror finish.

If all goes well with my Woodsman, I will install new red scales. Since it is an older retired model, I think it is better to stay with a traditional red for the scales. I plan to post a photo when I'm finished.

Jim

Woodsman Sunday! Although I don't have much use for the woodsaw (despite using the one on my Spirit a couple of times last week  ;) ), the Woodsman is just a fun model to carry. It makes me think of camping trips and craft projects, and I look at trails, trees and brush in a different way when I carry it.  :)

Reminds me of James Taylor "Going to Carolina in my mind", but I was actually in Carolina last week.  :D

I had a Climber with me.  :-\

My bladeless version is still being EDC'd.  :)

Since the only back tool on it at the moment is a corkscrew, I'm planning on adding the hook to the scissors which are at the opposite side of the SAK, as compared to the corkscrew layer. It should balance the aesthetics of the backside nicely.

A chisel might be useful too while you have it apart Pabs. Just a thought.  :salute:

I just took a photo of my Woodsman without the scales as a look at the "Before" condition. The photo actually makes the Woodsman look better than it is. On closer inspection, the small knife has a small chip (now I know how I was able to get this for only $29). I missed the awl when I was checking the tools for snap and needed to use a tool to pry it from its retracted position and pliers to move it to a fully retracted position.

Discovering the chip in the small blade was disappointing and has changed this from a restoration project to more of a spruce-up.  I will still give the Woodsman the spa treatment and progressive grit sanding plus Dremel buffing but excellent is now off the table (can't be excellent with a chip in the blade).

Still the basic platform is there to work with.  Old gray mag frame can't be beat.  I think the only thing missing to make a Woodsman near perfect is the chisel.

I agree with you on the grey mag Baz - I have an old Explorer that I'm going to nick parts for to 'upgrade' my modern Swisschamp. I'm replacing the thinner tang blade with the thicker tang, the mag and philips and will be adding a couple of extras to make it a Swiss SuperChamp. Watch this space..........

The only thing is... Is it still a bladeless woodsman derivative, what with everything I've taken off (blades and openers)?
Or something else entirely?
