REBAR needs scissors and a chissel
on: June 04, 2015, 06:13:36 PM
What could we take out of the Rebar to squeeze some PSTII-type scissors and a chissel in?

The first culperate I will name is the file, as it's probably the worst tool on the Rebar.

Also, do we really need the lanyard loop?

What are your thoughts?

Sub'd  :tu:

I have some Wave parts (including) scissors that I've been wanting to add to my Rebar.  I'd agree with the file, and I've never needed the lanyard loop, it's either in my pocket or in a sheath.  And for me, the can opener is almost always expendable, though it can be a decent package opener.

Beat me to it!  :D

I ditched the knives as I always prefer having a seperate knife, besides which, the ones onthe Rebar are quite underwhelming IMHO

Well the file and the lanyard loop together are about (Wave) scissors thickness so no great loss if you don't value either.   What are you making the chisel from?

Easy to make alternative provision for cutting and bottle opening.

I really think they left the scissors out to keep the Rebar from reaching perfection!  I really wish it came from them.  I'm amazed after all these years and all the feedback that Leatherman doesn't make them standard like they do the file, etc.

Wouldn't that require a diamond coated file as a minimum?

What would give to make room?   I fear somebody at LM would say yes we can if we install a single combo blade.  Whatever purists say about the current blade fit that surely would cue howls of protest.

I say that a knifeless Rebar is a great toolbox and that could/should be a stock model with scissors.

I'm torn. I actually use the blades on my Rebar quite often. I'm beginning to think the thing just needs to be made wider to facilitate the extra items

You can fit the wave scissors without losing anything with a little thinning of the can opener and lanyard ring. Or you can go crazy like Obishinobee's ReBlaster where he added the locks and pivots from a Blast to this Rebar.

Add a chisel tip to the file and replace the can opener and lanyard ring for scissors.

Add a chisel tip to the file

But isn't the file hardened ? (and therefore too brittle to be used for prying or as a chisel)  ???

I found the file was pretty soft. I probably wouldn't pry or twist with it but as a small scraper it should be more than okay.

Why add lame scissors to the Rebar?  Is any scissor smaller than the Micra really worth the bother?

Add a chisel tip to the file and replace the can opener and lanyard ring for scissors.

I continue to be wowed and mystified in equal measures just how much it is possible to fit in.  Don't currently have the (Wave) scissors installed as I'm short of numbers but the Wingman package opener and file/hex wrench are place holders for the scissors.  The same width as the removed blades.  The lanyard ring is thinner from another tool and the cap lifter is thinned yet I only have a 0.5mm washer spare.  Hence the mystery.

Anyway back to your file suggestion.  I don't know about the Rebar file material but as it happened I have a SOG file installed, the original having gone to Fuse. Didn't notice until now it has a screwdriver tip so that could easily be ground to a scraper.  Good suggestion  :salute:

And to answer your question:

Easy
  • One of the blades: Surely you can manage with one or the other
  • One of the screwdrivers: Do you really need two?

Or better still buy a Swisstool Spirit  :D
