Keep these Advertising Scales, or install new ones?
on: October 29, 2015, 02:13:00 AM
I have this Champion

I Really like it, and I think the ad logo is inlaid (not 100% sure) and I think it looks nice, but at the same time, like non-ad scales.

I can leave it, put a new set on, or I can replace just the front scale and have a shield on both sides.

I appreciate your opinions, and if you think it should stay as is, please let me know why, especially if It goes from an opinion to a warning that I am about to do something stupid by changing them

EDIT  we have the date on this nailed down to 1985

The advertising is what makes it stand out from other champions, I would leave it as is, personally.

First off I do not know if it is valuable as is. But I think that would look wicked awesome with two vic shields. In fact I just might have to start looking for one. This place is going to put me in the poor house. Anyways, otherwise I would leave it, either way you have a unique tool, and unique is good in my opinion.

I like the logo, and the font goes well with it. The logo side seems to have a good balance, if that makes any sense.

I would leave it as is.

If your gonna carry it, I would change them to Plus scales so I could have a pen and pin available.  :)

Have a Spartan with the same logo, so they're probably not rare. Jet Aviation is an aircraft maintenance and leasing firm out of Switzerland, owned by General Dynamics. I'm into transportation (planes, boats, trains) and happen to like the design.

Under most circumstances, I would retain the ad as part of the knife's special character. I would change the scale only if it advertised something disagreeable to me.
EDC: SwissChamp, Swisstool X, Zippo, Mini Maglite, all on my belt. I'm one more sheath away from becoming Batman.

In addition to a Wenger Handyman with a Kenworth cement truck advertising Fred Hill Materials of Poulsbo, Washington, that "Jet Aviation" logo has to be one of the coolest-looking promo imprints/inlays I've seen.

I'd say keep it as-is.  Old magnifying glass Champions are pretty cheap on Ebay.  Often, I come across promotional SAKs of which I've seen one and only one of.

Nice scales. I have some Jet Aviation SAK models.

They are printed not inlaid. An inlay will always be attached to itself all throughout the entire design. Since metal inlays are one piece you will see connections between each letter or design piece.
Some examples;

I know, I want that,  but these scales are in great shape for being 30 years old.  the painted logo looks like metal (doesn't look cheap)

I'm surprised how many people have voted for keeping the scales. For me personally, the advertising "spoils" the knife, unless whatever is being advertised is something that you are affiliated with or specifically interested in. However, my outlook has always been more about function than form or aesthetics, and I'm not big on branding (generally preferring a plain t-shirt to one emblazoned with logos or slogans etc) so I may just be the wrong person to appreciate the ad scales

For a Marketing guy, I also think advertising kind of ruins scales... well... unless it's something really pretty and/or custom: Avonex White/red Swisscard, Heineken Bottle/Green Jelly Swisscard, The Garant Nomad with dark-blue scales with orange tweezers, the Strellson Traveller with its Onyx scales and Mel Ramos graphics, the Beautiful Migros Climber with the Edelweiss and flag, most of army/border patrol/police ones, most ads on smooth Alox and the Bugnard Gold Alox lines.
