Vic vs Wenger
on: August 04, 2008, 11:03:09 AM
Everyone (Except bloody minded fence-sitting Def) has a preference between the two, there must be a reason why?

I don't have a wenger any more, but we can surely compare all the tools (both tools alike & tools quite different) between most models here! - as well as any other details that might cause a preference - blade shape, overall size?

Huh, here's the thread I was looking for....

Everyone???

I must be Def then-I don't have a preference between the two.

My Wenger Traveler is still one of my favorite SAKs. The only reason why I don't carry it around as much as I would like to is because I'm afraid of losing it. It has sentimental value.

I still prefer Vic's but thats purely because they have a much better Alox line :)

Where the Wenger 85mm's and Vic 91mm's are concerned it's less clear cut, as one will be better in some area's, like the Wenger Plier's, and some in other's ie Vic's scissors (really don't like the serrated scissors on the Wenger) :)

I like Wenger's quirkyness  :D  but not a patch on Vic imo.

I'm not so keen on the newer generation Wengers so I generally prefer Vics.  However, one of my most favourite SAK's is my Wenger SI.  :)

I like Wengers the best but I own more Victorinox SAKs because Wengers are harder to find in stores.

I like both Vic and Wenger.

I love the direction Wenger is going, and really like the 85mm form factor. Wenger is also coming up with many great little innovations, like locking drivers, adjustable pliers, EvoGrip scales, the NewRanger series, etc.

Oddly enough, almost all of that is offset by Vic's ever present can opener/phillips head, because I use that phillips more often than anything else except the blade. I still don't quite have the knack of opening cans with it though...  :-[

I think Wenger's PTC is easily the best little size SAK around.

Kudos to Vic for the beautiful alox in all those nice colors (and to Scibeer for making such beautiful mods with them).
Also for getting a clock/alarm/altimeter/thermometer into a SAK without materially increasing its bulk
(and to sell it for less than the price of an altimeter watch!)
Kudos to Wenger for their innovative specialty knives, like the bicycling SAKs with chain tools built in.

When you get to the big stuff, it's no contest.  New Rangers rock!   Bigger blade,  better ergonomics,
easier to open, easier to close.   By far the best pliers ever put on a SAK.  Is it any wonder that they
continue to add New Ranger models while they are discontinuing 111 models?

I think Wenger's quality has been excellent for quite a while now - on a par with Vic.

It hasn't always been that way, but they have been putting out some really well built stuff for quite a while now.

I own almost all Vics, but think Wenger's designs are much more innovative.

The only drawbacks to Wenger is that I don't like saying its name--WENG-GURRR.  I don't know why, but it sounds odd to me.

I also wish they would inlay the Wenger cross symbol with aluminum the way Victorinox inalys their silver colored shield into the scales.

Is WENGER pronounced Wing-Gir as in girl or is it Win-Ger as in gerbel?

This is just a guess, but I would imagine it would be "Venger" (a little like anger), and "Fictoree-knocks".

Like Volkswagen = Folksvagen...

Man that's weird.  I know the "V" is pronounced like an "F" sound in German, but is Victoriniox pronounced like "Fick tory nocks"??  Since Victorinox is named after Elsener's mother, Victoria, I would assume the name Victoria is still pronounced with the usual V sound in English...?

But good point about Wenger.  I suppose it's pronounced "Ven gur".

I think someone in SOSAK said that Germans did pronounce it "Vic-tor-ee-nox" with a 'V', so you are probably right. I was just guessing anyway - I don't really know the answer to any of this.

IIRC, Switzerland has four main languages:  German, Italian, French, and Romanch.

Any one of those languages may predominate in a given canton.  The first three languages use basically a Latin alphabet (and probably the last too) but often assign different phonemes to the same Latin letter or letter combination.

Isn't Wenger located in a French speaking canton?  Maybe it would make more sense to consider the French pronunciation of Wenger.

You should be getting your "medicine" in about a week.  ;)

It's more of a fix than a cure, though...

Even though some may disagree with me I think that Vic has a better fit and finish and feel to them.

But on the flip side Wenger have been cranking out alot of new stuff and I like their Evo and Evo Grip and their new Rangers.

For new and crazy stuff I go Wenger for fit and finish I go Vic.

When it comes to Swiss crosses I think Wenger has Victorinox beat. Nothing looks better that red anodized aluminum Swiss cross.
