leather vs. nylon sheath
on: January 23, 2009, 04:25:58 AM
which do you prefer? i like that leather looks good and weathers nicely...

but its rides WAY to high and sucks for water-resistance...

nylon on the other hand, is very water resistant an rides nice and low, you wont feel it when you sit down...

plus...i think it will be better for fitting a bit kit...

Don't like the leather sheath that came with my new wave, it's not even leather. The leather sheath that I got with my pst (old) is much better. The nylon sheath that came with the bit kit is nice and useful, but will abrade and deteriorate with hard use. the weave is of the softer variety.

i've noticed that...a SMALL part of the elastic pouch has kind of unraveled...i wish it were a bit stronger

Just used to wearing it that way.  Seems to catch on less stuff for me.

I am in between :)

I want a nylon sheath...but without the velcro. I hate it when I try to pull out my Leatherman in the public with the Nylon sheath which creates an annoying sound when opening it and everyone looks at me lol :-[

I also want the MOLLE sheath as well LOL...yeah the quick attachment option would be good as well...I don't wanna take off my belt if I want the sheath off :)

Yup I want a sheath threesome

I use the nylon but the velcro has lost its sticking ability. I've been thing about putting a snap on it but I'm not sure where to get one and it's not high on my priority list.

I prefer the old leather sheaths. Do not care much for the new style. I would like the nylon better if it had a longer flap for more velcro to make it more secure. My main concern is to keep the tool secure and in place.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

Nylon for me too. The leather sheath that came with my Charge is of very poor quality and its too bulky. Plus, when fully loaded, it looked like it was pregnant.

I picked up the nylon sheath to try this past August. I've used it most every day since then and its still working just fine. Yes, the Velcro leaves something to be desired, but the over all better quality is still worth it, IMO.

And this from a person who loves leather sheaths. One of these days, I'll just make my own.

Oh, I wear mine horizontally too. Its more comfortable to me that way.

Strange, I find the leather Charge sheaths to be excellent quality, as good as any of the competitors, and in most cases superior.

What quality issues did you have with it Lion?
I used to come here a lot.

I guess mine could have been a dud. There isn't one big problem, just a lot of little problems. The craftsmanship is lacking. Things like uneven cutting and unfinished edges. And the leather itself isn't that great. A bit too dry and brittle feeling. I could have done a slightly better job and I'm not particularly skilled at leather working. Probably because I hate it.

Even if the quality was better, I probably still wouldn't be satisfied with it. A thinner leather, of good quality, would have worked better, IMO.

I Sh@# can all my stock sheaths , and go with duty belt mag pouches , much better overall quality and wear resistance . I also make my own leather stuff , which if properly treated will last for decades , longer than the tool will survive !
