Marlinspike
on: July 27, 2013, 11:02:58 AM
Another question for the experts around here... I saw some pictures of (old?) vics with a marlinspike that pretty much looked like a oversized sewing needle (sorry, only way i can
describe it). Now, I'm betting those are quite rare? Are they exceptionally expensive?

The older ones are a it more expensive ($120+) but there have been a couple of newer runs in the last year or so at more affordable prices.

If you're looking for one your best bet is to keep your eyes pealed at felinevet's store on EDCS or post a request here in the tools needed section. Maybe someone has one they'd be willing to part with.

they are rare, new marlinspike+shackle opener style vics have now like helmsman, skipper and workchamp xl.

if you need it, grind down a useless nasty fish scaler (91mm), a saw,a file or a knife (111mm)

It's a horrible marlinspike, btw, as it has a sharp edge, it is not rounded all the way round. As a sacking needle I would presume it works just fine.

Well, outside of Felinvet, any Marlin spike model, old or new, you 'll have to spend more than Us $ 150, right now on ebay is an old first mate, with some hours left, for more than 200......

Tying and loosening knots. Anything a sewing needle can do.

Makes it MUCH easier to tie an eye splice as well.

For Example; this is my tow strap. It's 4" Amsteel Blue Synthetic Rope.

I needed an eye so I spliced on in and covered it with 1/2" just for the look.

We used 2 Marlin Spikes made out of rebar. One held the standing end straight while we used another about 6" long to guide the running end in and out and across itself.

Poking things, untying knots, small prying tasks (very small). Sheer beauty of having a spike!
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

No pics at the moment, but marlinspike does come in handy in paracord work :)

I would imagine that the SAK marlinspike would be quite helpful doing paracord/weaving projects, and for untying small knots, much like using a Fid (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fid)   It doesn't look hefty enough for breaking large knots in larger line or any type of prying.

I use the marlinspike on my G.Ibberson for breaking knots in all sizes of line, for prying open shackles and the like.  It can handle quite a lot of force and locks open.
