Like to see 'em try that on my 1970 Land Rover.  Hell, it didn't even come with a radio.  8)

I own a Chrysler, but it is old enough not to be wireless connected to anything other than the key-fob remote to unlock the doors. Until car companies wise up and completely decouple all essential systems from any form of wireless communication, I won't be buying any new vehicles from them.

Just another reason why I do not own a car capable of having this happen to it.

I remember years ago police using the OnStar system to disable cars in high speed chases.

I would have thought that OnStar vehicles would be a lot more susceptible to this kind of thing.

Chryslers stop at the side of the road all the time on their own, without any external help!  I should know, I have two of them, and I imagine that is only going to get worse now that Fiat owns them!  :P

As an aside, I find it amusing that Jeep, the icon of American supremacy in WWII has now been owned by two of the three major Axis superpowers- Germany and Italy, or Mercedes and Fiat.

I also find it amusing that the new Jeep Renegade (actually MADE by Fiat and imported from Italy) has "SINCE 1941" moulded into the dashboard.

In 1941 Jeeps and the Italians weren't exactly the best of friends!   :ahhh

Saw the story on CBS news this morning....I imagine the masses are just getting revved up...including a congressman trying to introduce a new law against it all.

I had my oil changed today, and the folks at the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership didn't know much about it. The shop manager told me it was only an American issue.  :D

Apparently this has raised a lot of concern. I just saw this story on my local news and Chrysler has already released a update to help security.

I never thought I would be talking about a "update" for a car.  ::)

This is crazy...makes me chuckle a little bit though, as my Jeep doesn't even have power windows or locks :D

"All your car are belong to us".

Funny you should say that, GM recently made comments about that too:

http://boingboing.net/2015/05/21/gm-says-you-dont-own-your-ca.html

GM says you don't own your car, you just license it

GM has joined with John Deere in asking the government to confirm that you literally cannot own your car because of the software in its engine.

Like Deere, GM wants to stop the Copyright Office from granting an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that would allow you to jailbreak the code in your car's engine so that you can take it to a non-GM mechanic for service, or fix it yourself. By controlling who can service your car, GM can force you to buy only official, expensive parts, protecting its bottom line.

As Consumerist quips, GM wants you to know that the car in the driveway is "literally not your father's Oldsmobile."

GM’s claim is all about copyright and software code, and it’s the same claim John Deere is making about their tractors. The TL;DR version of the argument goes something like this:

    * Cars work because software tells all the parts how to operate

    * The software that tells all the parts to operate is customized code

    * That code is subject to copyright

    * GM owns the copyright on that code and that software

    * A modern car cannot run without that software; it is integral to all systems

    * Therefore, the purchase or use of that car is a licensing agreement

    * And since it is subject to a licensing agreement, GM is the owner and can allow/disallow certain uses or access.

I think I'll stick with Chrysler and their buggy issues rather than driving the car that GM let's me use in exchange for a hefty monthly license fee.
