Part of me can't believe...
on: August 07, 2008, 05:56:37 AM
That I went ahead and spend a few $$ on the SWISSGRIP!

With my Blast and Wave

Side by Side.

This thing is a beast! Too big to wear on my belt, but man it's just begging to be used. I feel like I could build a house with this thing.

Oh, and I just gotta add, Tim, you are my hero.

Congrats!

What more could a man want other than some heavy duty pliers, a good long driver, a clip point blade, a nice long saw, metal file, and a bottle opener to wet the whistle with.  :drink:

Seriously, very nice haul. Does anyone have any comparisons shots of a SwissGrip and a NewRanger? I am pretty sure I saw some but can't find them...

That is a big heavy sucker!!! Strong, durable, but weighs about as much as a LM Surge

The knife and woodsaw are the same as are on the old Rangers.
The woodsaw is also the same on the new Rangers AFAIK,
but they changed to a spearpoint blade on the new ones.

I couldn't find it either,  so I got out all my Rangers for a family photo:

The little guy on the upper left is a Vic OHT for size comparison.

Believe it or not,  all those knives fit in my pockets at once  (I'm wearing cargo pants)  (They didn't fall down either).
Would be a bit much for EDC though.

The 58 (upper left next to the OHT) has the lowest list price of the current models depicted.
Wenger also makes Rangers with fewer tools (including blade-only models).
The 2 gray ones on the lower left are old Rangers which are out of production.

Check with felinevet.  He has very good prices on several of these.

The Alinghi (top middle) and the Touring 174 (top right) are the only ones that come with sheaths.
They are significantly more expensive than the others.

Sheaths can be purchased separately for the other New Rangers.
Sheaths for the WengerGrip seem to be unobtainium.

Great pic, Andy!

I can't imagine walking around with all those in my cargo pants. :D

How strong would you say the Ranger pliers are in relation to other multitools?

An Alinghi with a saw instead of the marlin spike would be awesome. I can't convey with words how awesome.

Wrong question, I suspect. A better one would be "which one is in the center"? ;)

They certainly aren't as strong as the ones on a Swisstool or a Wengergrip.
They are more of a needlenose, so not for the really heavy stuff, but they're stronger than they look.

That would be the Alinghi.

A few years ago,I was able to pick up some SwissBucks cheaply at some flea markets, but the Buck collectors drove up the prices way too high on Ebay for my tastes.
