Cheap but OK hawk
on: July 18, 2015, 12:05:02 PM
I just got this hawk type hatchet from commerciol.com for €12.81 + shipping (€4,50 to Norway ).

They call it the Axe King 40cm.

When it arrived the head was a little rattly, but after giving it a good thump, head down, on the chopping block, that was fixed.
The fit and finish isnt the greatest, the head has tool marks on it and isnt perfectly symnetrical. But it is well balanced, and the wheight to shaft length ratio is just right in my opinion.
It came without a edge cover thoug, so Ill have to make that.
After splitting some wood and doing some light feathering with it, It seems to be a surprisingly good hawk considering the price. Especially for us Europeans if they continue with the low shipping price.

Looks like a good deal mate.  I actually like the look of the 33cm one as well. Obviously shorter, but the shape of the head is nice: http://commerciol.com/Hunting-Knives/Axes-and-Saws/Axe-King-33cm

Please excuse the phone camera quality pictures.

Fist off I genuinely wondered what I'd ordered.  I couldn't for the life of me connect this small and light package with it being an axe.

Once I'd taken a few seconds to think about it and saw where it came from my next thought was that it didn't seem all that well packaged.  Fortunately I was wrong and it took quite a lot of cutting to get into it.

The only SAK I had in my pocket when taking the pics was a 58mm, thought the No7 Opinel is very SAK-like in size, in fact it's a little longer.

The cheeks are a lot more wedge shaped than I've seen on a lot of 'hawks.  It certainly splits the light wood I've got at home to well enough.

As compared to my Cold Steel Trail Hawk.

I'll have to bring it in from the garage and weigh it.  It really is feather light.  For the money the quality is fine, though not exceptional.  I certainly wouldn't have wanted to pay much more than say, £20 on it.  For those still struggling with the scale this little guy is the size and weight of a light hammer.  The handle is probably a bit too slim for most people's taste and I'll almost certainly be doing some kind of wrap on it.

OK, so having thought about a wrapped handle I decided to just get sonething done.  Not the most fancy of knot-work but it now fills my hand much better.  Also I added an extra hole in the strap of a mask I made for another axe so as I can pack it safely.

If it's not then I'll just find a way to blame Kirky.

Throws very well indeed. >:D
