Which one to get next?
on: July 16, 2015, 07:01:11 PM
Situation: Suburban user, occasionally go for light hikes on the weekends.

SAKs already owned: Cybertool 34, Workchamp, Super Tinker, Hiker, Recruit, Manager, Classic, Evo 14, EvoGrip S16, Old Soldier, New Soldier, OHO NS Trekker, Adventurer, Executive, Explorer Plus, Wenger S557, Wenger Matterhorn, Wenger BikeTool, Climber, Small Tinker, Sportsman, Wenger Highlander, Wenger Evowood 10, Spartan Lite.

I'm thinking that the file on the Mountaineer and the marlin spike on the Skipper are those tools that I'd use more if I had one on me.

Nah, just trying to make it easy for y'all to help me out. I figure the people who see this but don't necessarily want to spend the time to type out a reply may be willing to click a button. :)

Also, I'm thinking too much about SAKs these days...

My favorite for this situation is the Expedition Lite - especially if you're amenable to pouch carry. Adds the woodsaw to the above mentioned Mountaineer Lite (useful on hikes) and I really like the Traveller scales. I found the altimeter to be surprisingly accurate on the trail hikes I've taken mine on, and if you're hiking up hills, it's a great way to let you know how close to the summit you are. Temperature and barometer are both handy while out hiking as well, but the knife needs to not be in your pocket for them to work well.

From your list you seem to have the urban side of things pretty tied up. Hows about a 130mm Wenger Ranger for those weekend hikes?

The SAK light is so close to worthless (especially considering how much real estate it takes), that I immediately dismiss all SAK Lite models for regular carry.  AAAX1 lights are so much better, (and cheaper to keep in batteries), to me it's a no brainier.

I'd sort of lean towards the Skipper.  Especially after seen that video.  Great multipurpose tool that marlin spike.

Sometimes, all you need is a little light. More, and your night vision is gone.  As long as you don't confuse those times with the other times, it's good to go.

Your vote and rationale are well-noted though.

My vote is this is something that can not happen.

I'd probably suggest the Mountainer.

The Skipper is unusual for most, so there's a bit of uniqueness there.  The question is really do you want a user or novelty/collector?

Good luck and once you make a decision, some pics and your rationale will be required!

Wow!  Now that's a cool blade!

I've never paid attention to the Marlboro SAKs.  I looked this one up based on your post...that's a cool knife!  Now I'm looking for one.

Thanks...SAKguy

So now Smaug, I'm still interested in the Mountaineer, but a lot more interested in the Marlboro Trail Guide.
