Headlights?
on: August 16, 2015, 04:22:55 PM
Back in the 60s it was all about cheap 2 D flashlights and Camp King pocket knifes. Then came along 3 D Mag Lites. I still have two in good working order. I now carry them in my cars for clubs. Then came along AA Mag Lites and Buck Knifes. Now you can buy a workable LED flashlight for a buck. A few years back I tried a head light now they are about the only light I use they are great break downs changeling a tire, rigging fishing lines or just about anything when you need hands free lighting. The one problem I have with them is the white lights attract bugs that is not good when you have a light strapped to your head. I have been covering the lenses the plastic load flags from Home Depot to make a makeshift red light. Can anyone recommend a low cost Three AAA headlight that has white and red LEDs or even better white, red, blue and green LEDs so I could try them all.

I got a 3 pack from Homesdepot ( $9.99 post xmas sale ) that has white/red/green, they worked great while camping.  They are not the highest quality ( battery compartment ) but I've not had any problems.  The brand is Defiant the model is 809-3602-D  store sku 737712.

I really like my Energizer Hardcase Pro 4 LED Headlight.  It's 3x AA though, and has high/low white light, and a green and red light.

I'm a Petzl fan here. They can run the range of prices, but mine have been utterly dependable and have never had a problem, so I consider it money well spent. My current one has a couple of brightness settings plus white and RGB LEDs and emergency flash.

I've also given Black Diamond branded ones as gifts and have received very positive feedback on those as well.

I have headlights on my van...

But seriously, I like the Black Diamond ones. I have a Cosmo.

I have an inexpensive Black Diamond that has been working great for a few years now, however it doesn't meet your specs.
Princeton tech and Petzl are 2 very good companies as well

Are you still looking for a headlamp?

I only have two, to date:

Left - Fenix HP25
Right - Nitecore HC50

I've grown particularly attached to the HC50. Great user interface, much lighter, in weight, than the HP25. Solid construction. The HP25 feels like a toy, by comparison.

The HC50 would probably be more suited to your needs, since it has Red LEDs.  Pressing and holding the side switch, activates them (tapping the switch again alternates to blinking, rather than constant.  Very usable.

It runs on a single 18650 battery, has five different power outputs, plus the usual hidden modes (S.O.S., beacon).   I use this one a lot, these days (I've begun EDCing it, in my bag).

Edit - I just re-read your thread.  Low cost and AAA - I'm afraid these headlamps are neither.  You may want to ignore the suggestion; but if you're open to running a light on a higher performance battery, the HC50 is still a viable choice.  It's worth the stretch. The Fenix HP25 runs on four AA batteries, and the battery pack is mounted to the head straps, so it's kind of heavy.  Nice light, though, with two different emitters; one for spot, and one for flood.  The two emitters can be used independently, or simultaneously for a total of 360 lumens, combined.  Unfortunately, no color LED options on the HP25.  Just the white light.

Another Petzl fan here for headlamp, my only suggestion is to take a look at the older models of Petzl where the switch on top is a real 'clicky'.  Since they are older, maybe a little less lumens, but absolute joy to use and totally reliable.

The modern light touch switch is not entirely reliable(even the manufacturers may claim to have circuit lock, I did have incidents they switched on itself), only way I can ensure they won't accidentally turn on is by putting them in a hard case(which is bulky).

The HC50 I mentioned has a mechanical switch, with a very solid feel to it.  Half presses cycle through the modes; so I suspect it's some sort of hybrid switch.  I haven't had any problems with any of my Nitecore lights (I own eleven of them, to date); but I've only been using them for a few years, so it's hard to judge the potential long-term use.

Keeping my fingers crossed lol.

I bought this head light at Lows for 19.00 it has two red lights and three white lights one large and two smaller you can run all three at once 200 lumens or you can use the one large light or the two smaller lights. You can dim the lights in all the white light modes. It runs on three AAA battery's. I have plenty of AAA rechargeable battery's. So far I like it very much it is light easy to use.

I've had 2 or 3 of those Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp (AAA) for several years. Simple and reliable...not one glitch.
