what spec laptop do i need to run photoshop?

As the title suggests, im in the market for a new laptop and would like it to be able to run photoshop do i need something super high spec?

laptops dont seem to have particuarly sped up in the last few years from what i can tell either whats the deal there?

my 6year old 2 core mac is 2.13ghz and pc world were trying to flog me a 1.7ghz i5 saying it would be faster....

any advice welcome

Just because a computer has similar or higher clock speed does not make it faster. Using GHz is a very poor way to compare apples to oranges.

With that said, here are the requirements to run Photoshop in both PC and Mac.

So your laptop just needs to meet those specs, or better them.

Well, if you have PS-32bit there is no need for more than 4GB of RAM (more is simply not supported). If you have a 64bit version I highly recommend 16GB or more.

That is the bottle-neck with PS. Next thing is a fast disk, the processor comes 3rd. I worked a lot with a i5-2.2GHz* / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD and that worked quite well. I would say that is the minimum requirement if you use it on a regular base.

*I think, can't remember the precise CPU Specs but it was a modded MacMini.

P.S.: That is assuming Windows, other OS my play by other rules.

i did wonder as i was walking round thinking why have they slowed down? i also dont trustthe sales people as far as i could throw them!

My desktop has 16 GB RAM, i7 and Windows 8.1 and it runs PS no faster than my 2009 MacBook Pro, 2.66 with 4 GB of RAM. Now that I've installed an SSD, the Mac might be faster.

A lot will depend on the photoshop version

I have photoshop on a 2007 PC (decent specs, at the time) and it runs fine.

The photoshop version is a few,maybe 4?, years old.

Photoshop is less important than the size of the photo and what you want to do.
If you have a 300 MB tiff with 100 layers and want to add effects to it, without a few dozen Gigs of RAM, you are up a creek.
If you have a 1 MB jpg and want to lighten it or remove a branch, Photoshop CS3 (which is free by the way) and a 586 is more than enough.
