Nope, I do have that one. It is ok for what it is. Not a SAK, as it is larger than one I think. Photos shall be posted soon in here when I take them.
Here is the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Pocket Tool which is a 91mm 2 layer Victorinox knife versus the Bear Grylls Pocket Tool which is um...er...3 layers. As you can see in the above photo, it is a bit shorter than the standard sized Victorinox. But you give up so much more in width. The BG Pocket Tools needs to be put on a serious diet here. Now looking on the back side...You just know you have a BG product...because it clubs you over the head repeatedly. Yep, there is no mistaking a BG product. I wonder if Gerber and SOG get together at the local pub some nights and talk into the wee hours about corporate logos and their placement on every square inch? I have to just wonder... Note also that the BG Pocket Tool can be called a 3 layer...but you do not get anything for that extra layer compared to a SAK (The Phillips driver takes up two layers). Just saying.Yes count them...each gives you 4 fold out tools. Now let us look at ergonomics. Everyone should know by now that I do like the grippy textured designs on the whole BG lineup. I like a good positive grip when holding a knife, and the textured rubber grips are simply awesome in that regard. However, as with the DofE SAK, you do not get a sheath, so pocket carry will be the usual route. Now this is where that grippy surface counts against it. I have found that the rubber not only grips the hand nicely, but also your pocket material. So be prepared for a little struggle sometimes just to get the knife out into the open air. It is not that bad...but it does happen on occasion. Of course, the SAK's curved shape make is a pleasure to pocket carry. With that said, the BG does have rounded corners of hard plastic...and the "brick" is comfortable enough to EDC. Another issue with the BG is the hard stiff back springs. You do not attempt to open this up with one hand. That is a good way to lop off a finger tip if you are trying to coax the blade to come out and play. Mind you, the SAK is pretty much in the same boat. It is just that the BG is a little more stiffer than the SAK, particularly if you try to deploy the Philips. Of course you do not get a tweezer or toothpick with the BG.
Yes count them...each gives you 4 fold out tools.
Is the Greenhorn the improved version of the knife posted by the OP?I never had a Bear Grylis knife before. The one I was most tempted by was the full size one, which is actually similar to the one he used in the show. The rest, he just whored out his name. (knives may be good or bad)The Gerber I'm most tempted by is the Fit Lite. Great tool set, proper flashlight. Spotty implementation though.Oh, and the Dime too. Seems to be a perennial favorite around here.
