That rain gear sounds good, usually water can find its way in somewhere on a longer ride.   :tu:

It is very good gear and the price reflects it. I ride everyday and have realised the value is good gear. One's comfort level is so much better and it makes riding easy and worry free. I have been cold and damp before, and that is not nice. Eventually it becomes dangerous as one's body fights the cold and your concentration levels go away. And in the windy rainy days one wants as much concentration as possible. This was the first real long wet test for the gear and it passed with flying colours!!!

Off for another short ride tomorrow.

G'Day

Last ride for 2020 - the year of the corona  :D

Sydney was beautiful today, a few clouds and some light wind. A perfect day for our last ride this year.

It started with a Christmas drop-off at my motorbike mechanic. In his words "Off course Pete, we are family" And that is so true. They have been looking after my bikes since 2009 and never have I had to complain or worry about something not done. After that off to Saddles for breakfast and good coffee. That done, off to the ferry. The road next to the river is windy and always good for scenic stuff. We stopped half way for pictures, next stop another coffee. We said our goodbyes there and back home.

This year was an interesting year for our biking in Oz. Our annual ride was cancelled due to the virus chaos and with the home arrest regulations we could not even do day rides. This was back in March. The next ride was planned for May to bring some monetary relief to the bush-fire towns. That was ten days that we planned to visit as many towns affected by the fires. We decided that we will only carry water and clothing, EVERTING else had to be bought. That included personal toiletries, food and daily needs. We were only allowed clothing and bike specific tools and a first aid kit. We estimated that we could add around $150 to $180 per day per person. Well that did not happen either, sadly. We were still under house arrest, so no social riding.

Eventually some of the restrictions were lifted, but no holidays left. All that was left was to do some day rides, some of which I posted here.

We will now do our original trip next year in April, but will only stick to our state: New South Wales. It is big enough for a two week ride. We are planning to go to the meeting point of three states: New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. The place is called Cameron Corner. I will do a decent ride report when we come back.

Enjoy the last ride pics.

Have a merry Christmas and Happy New Year, if you celebrate that.

Cheers, Pete

Looks like a great time!

I have to admit, I'm a bit off-put by the size and weight of the BMW bikes, but I would absolutely love having a sealed drive shaft instead of an exposed chain. I get so tired of having to clean and maintain the chain constantly as it's messy, time consuming, and the cost kind of adds up.

G'Day Mate,

Some of the BMW's are big, especially the GS range. I have one and the R9T. The R9T is much lighter, smaller and nimbler that the older GS bikes. It weighs 221 kg, not too light, but manageable. Being a Boxer engine design a lot of the weight is carried low and once moving most of that disappears.

Moto Guzzi is your other option. The V7 range is in my opinion one of their best offerings. DT here has one, and it looks like a great bike. When I was looking to add a commuter, shaft drive was my only non-negotiable option. That limited me to big touring bikes, BMW boxer bikes or Moto Guzzi. I went with the BMW for the looks and the power I needed (wanted/craved  :D). I do like the Boxer engine a lot!!! With the 'Guzzi you also get huge amounts of character and that is important to me.

If you are ready to upgrade, go for a couple of rides on different bikes. Get the one that "speaks" to you.

G'Day,

Happy New Year Inmates!!!

First ride for 2021. Today was a good day out on the bike. Sydney is still wet. We have been having rain on and off for the last two weeks making riding more difficult for some. We have a social riding club at work and "publish" intended rides a week or so before the time. Being all shift workers there are always a different group of people on each ride. My usual riding buddies came along too, being on holidays. We have been watching the forecast for the last week and today cleared up a little. We still had drizzle and fog, but no hard rain like I had last week. We had four BMW's and 'ol Mate Jamie on his new Indian Scout. The Scout is a lovely bike, but has a very small (12,5L) fuel tank. The whole ride was planned around fuel availability  :D. The big GS's don't have issues with tanks from 24L to 30L. My R9T is smaller with only 17L, but that still gives me 300km.

The ride was called the two lookout and two ferry ride. We stopped at the look-outs briefly, the only time it was raining softly. From there on was lunch, cross the last ferry (Wisemans Ferry) to our next fuel stop and last coffee for the day. We went our separate ways after that. A smallish day, only 265 km for me.

I enjoyed today again. I like the rain and riding in it. It is fresh, keeps you on your toes and not to many weekend warriors out trying to prove they are Superman!!!

Enjoy the pics,

Pete

G'Day,

The holidays have kept me quite busy. I had time to eventually finish an ammo case that I started ages ago. I use them for day-rides and "posing"  :D mostly. They are pretty sturdy, but small. I can fit a first aid kit, tool roll, wallet and phone and a small water bottle if needed. I usually ride with a hydo back-pack and don't need the massive bags any longer. The paintwork matches the colours of the bike and my daughter did the little "GS" lettering and the letter highlights on the side. I still have to line it with leather inside. Saturday will be the test!!!

I am also working on a second one that will be bare metal, coated in clear only to stop the rust.

Cheers, Pete

G'Day,

Top box done. I did all the lining with leather last night, glue cured over night ready for me to test fit and pack. Fitting is spot-on with the flat u-brackets with zero movement. All the stuff for Saturday's ride fits too - that is a bonus...

I'll post some pics and comments over the weekend once we did our ride.

Cheers, Pete

Looooong time no posts, seems like covid has been brutal on us bikers. I have been riding the last few days and found a very nice but slippery 4x4 trail this morning. We have had plenty rain the last few days and all the tracks are slippery. It was the first time I got to test these Mitas tires in the mud. They are pretty good, a knobby tire would have been better, but I stayed upright!!!

The bike is due for its 120K service next week. Still loving the 1150!!!

Cheers, Pete

Thanks Aloha,

I had to fix it up after our May trip to where three of the Ozzie states meet: New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland at Cameron's Corner. A two week trip with a lot of dirt roads. Bike and me took a bit of a toll. Lost all my electrics on day 6 and the crown bearing on the last day. Still managed to nurse it home the final day of 550 km, with oil leaking over the rear wheel. Not something I would like to repeat in a hurry, if at all!!! I used 500ml of gear-oil that day. Every time I stopped a puddle the size of a dinner plate will collect under the rear wheel.

As for the trip, Oz looked fantastic after the rains and it was good to get out between the brutal lockdowns we had!!! It is wonderful what nature does to ones mental health, even with a broken bike. I have an emotional attachment to this bike. I'll never sell it!!!

Some pics of the Cameron Corner trip.

Note the oil and the broken bearing

Cameron's Corner, the picture of the three bikes are the actual road. The lake over it was from the rains the two weeks before we arrived. The pic of the bike on it's side is the road around the lake through the dunes. A big fat GSA is not made for that!!!

That looks very cool. Is it a metal model?

Thanks for the comments guys, I agree Aloha, seeing a country on a bike is pretty special. One is far more part of the journey than in a car.

Yes, very thin, it comes as a flat sheet and you have to bend each piece into a 3D form to put them all together which connect via tab that get bent or twisted (no soldering) to make the model,,

G'Day,

We finally had a break in the rain and Sydney turned out a fantastic weekend. After a good three weeks of rain and floods in Oz, my son and I got out for some quality riding time. We spend Saturday and Sunday on the bikes going to see some of the flood affected areas and appreciate the sun we have not seen in a while. The boy has upgraded his license from a Learner to a Provisional licence and with that a bigger bike. He started on the venerable Honda CB125 and rode that for 8 months whilst on his Learners licence. In December he passed his provisional licence and the deal we had is that he can get a bigger bike. He is 17 and already 6"3, the 125 was WAY to small and underpowered. Make no mistake, it is one of the best bikes to learn on, dependable, light and easy to ride. It is a commuter and that it does very well. Australia is big and I like touring it, doing that on a 125 where he drops to around 65 kmh on every hill take patience...

A month ago we bought a CB500X for him. It fits him much better and most important he can now keep up to the speed limit. The bike is 5 years old with only 17,000 kms on the clock. Very good condition and perfectly suited for him. Last week the bike got some new tires, heated grips and sorted the GPS wiring out. This weekend was to scrub the tires in and test all the electrical stuff. All passed with flying colours. We did a tad under 600 kms for the two days, and boy-child is well tired today. Another reason for the two day's ride was to see how his riding fitness is. We are going on a week trip during the July holidays and I needed to see where he needs improvement in mental and physical fitness. Riding multiple days in all weather conditions takes some concentration and preparation. I ride every day and drive trains for a living, so my mental driving / riding fitness is quite good. He is also limited to 90 kmh on his license, and THAT is a fatiguing speed!!! I battled yesterday to keep the speed low, I don't want him to speed... yet...

I include some pictures of the flooding in Richmond, 15kms from our house and the bikes off course. The water is receding and the bridge is expected to open in the next day or two. There are towns up north that was not so lucky and they have had big parts of the town under water . Our thoughts go out to them.

Cheers, Pete
