I was looking into maybe getting something so that I could carry a bottle of water on the motorcycle. I found something at one of the local dollar stores. It is a bicycle drink holder that is designed to clamp around the handle bars. For the low price, I couldn't refuse. I tried it out yesterday and found that I needed a piece of rubber to prevent the clamp from turning. The quick fix for that was wrapping a strip off a roll of toolbox non-slip foam matting and clamping the cup holder to that. Tried it out today at highway speeds, and it held a bottle of water nicely. Now I can drink and drive.

G'Day,

It is school holidays here in NSW at the moment and we decided to do a "double" holiday. Mrs and the kids get to ski for a week while I get to ride with a mate whilst the skiing takes place. HOW GOOD IS THAT!!!

We stayed in a town called Jindabyne close to the Ozzie Alpine Region. There are two main ski fields close to Jindabyne: Perisher and Threadbo. We chose to go to Threadbo for the week as the skiing is a little more technical. The snow was surprisingly thick for September and Ozz standards: just a tad over 2,5m.

Jindabyne is one one those little gem towns. A fantastic lake to walk and cycle around, as well as the hustle of skiing peoples. It is also a mecca for mountain bike riders and motorcyclists - like us. My riding buddy stayed in a town Beridale 30 kms out of Jindabyne. We met up every morning and planned our day. Most of the riding we did were withing a 250km radius of Jindabyne. The first day we explored Lake Eucumbene, which is one of the dams that forms part of the Snowy Hydro Scheme. There are a total of 16 dams that forms one of the biggest hydro-electrical schemes in the Southern Hemisphere. Sadly it is only 37% full and we were able to get "right into" the dam for morning tea. Next was a little town called Cabramurra for lunch. There we had the good fortune to ride in the snow. It is only the second time in my life that I have seen falling snow, let alone ride in it. It was a fantastic experience. All in all a very good day.

The next two days we spent riding around Cooma exploring lots of dirt. The bikes handled it extremely well and we had tired happy bodies at the end of the day. The weekend we all got together on the farm in Beridale and the kids got to ride dirt bikes and quads for two days. I got to practice a lot of slow riding on the GS following the kids and teaching them how to handle dirt bikes. More tired and sore bodies, but I could not have asked for a better week in Oz. This is a fantastic country to ride, and the GSA seems a perfect bike to explore it all. If you have a big or scenic country, get out there and ride it.

Enjoy the pics

Pete

How did I know this topic would exist  :D

I've owned a number of bikes over time, but not for a couple of years, I stopped into a shop yesterday and I pick this up later in the week, just wanted something to dink around on, and take care of my two wheel urges, I'll be sure to post pics of my adventures

G'Day,

My daily GSA ride got a little brother this week. I only ride a bike and clock around 30,000 kms each year. I really like the GSA and don't want to replace it with another one. The newer ones have a little more technology that mine, but the biggest problem is that the Olive colour is not available any more. So for the GSA's 100,000 km "birthday" last week (3 1/2 years old) I decided that it is now a good time to relegate it to touring duties only.

BMW started the Heritage range a few years ago after the success of the RNineT. These bikes have the last of the 1200cc air/oil cooled twin-cam motor which oozes character. My choice was initially the Scrambler, however a year later the Urban G/S was released and I was sold. The colour scheme takes us back to the original R80 G/S that was released in 1980. This bike started, which is arguably one of the most successful classes in today's motorcycle genre - Adventure touring. The Urban G/S is much more a styling exercise than a full blown off-road touring bike. It will handle dirt roads well but I don't think it is going to jump to well. More "Urban" than "GS". I took it today for its first good run. What a hoot it was. I'm still running it in, but with loads of torque available there is no need to work it very hard. And the sound of the stock pipe is FANTASTIC. This bike is hooligan mad!!!

Enjoy the pics, I still have it in stock form except for the bright red belly pan!!! There is a box of stuff in the garage that will be fitted in the next few days.

Cheers

Pete

G'Day,

I just got back from a 6 day ride in the Australian Snowy Mountains. All up we did a tad over 2,500kms on a good mix between black top and dirt. A mate and I are on a mission to visit all the dams that form part of the Snowy Hydro Project. This time we added another two to our total. We are now 7 dams down out of a total of 16. Our favourite day was yesterday (Monday) when we went to the Geehi Dam in the Kosciuszko National Park. The dam was completed in 1966 and is 25km off the main road through the National Park. The road in is dirt in quite good condition. The bikes had no troubles with the road. I recently changed tires to Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR which is more dirt focused than the Anakees I had on before. I LOVE these tires. On the black top they stick as good as a road tire and I could get the bike right over on the edge without loosing any grip. In the dirt they were very good. I am a fan. The only thing is tire life... with 92 kw running through them I'm afraid they will not see 10K kms. But I can live with that, they are SO sticky!!!

Weather was great. We saw the last of the snow on Friday with a cool 5 degrees C. Today we rode home in 32 degrees C. No rain, cool mornings and great mates. Enjoy the pics.

Pete

Geehi Dam is a major ungated rockfill embankment dam with an uncontrolled glory hole spillway across the Geehi River in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. The dam's main purpose is for the generation of hydro-power and is one of the sixteen major dams that comprise the Snowy Mountains Scheme, a vast hydroelectricity and irrigation complex constructed in south-east Australia between 1949 and 1974 and now run by Snowy Hydro.

Nice pietervn,
I’ve always wanted to ride a bike, heck I’ve even like to do the one 48state camper trip. I thought the one biker route was just corner to corner, or the strait across, but hell, this one would be a freaking dream in a camper, The Year-Long, 12,679 Mile USA Bike Tour With Perfect Weather, wow! My grandparents did something similar for 7yrs but kept going back to Arizona, he was in the air force for 27yrs and never saw the US, so that’s what they did, sold the house and car, bought the trailer and truck, and traveled! Kept going back to AZ, sold the trailer and truck, and bought in! Hey that’s the way to do it!

G'Day JR,

That is one very big trip they did!!!

A lot of Ozzies do something similar here, we call them Grey Nomads.

I'm planning a trip around Oz with my son as soon as he finishes high school. That will be in 2022. A full Oz circumvent is around 17,500 kms if you include a trip to Cape York, the most northern tip of the Australian mainland. I have put 3 months aside for it. Riding no more than six days a week, and do that in three week blocks. The seventh day is washing and the fourth week in off the bike for a rest period. That way I figure one will see more than just black top and staying over an extra day does not make for lots of kms to catch up.

Nix: These bikes are fantastic!!! This week it did everything I wanted and more in superb comfort!!!

Cheers,

Pete

I heard bmw’s are one of the best smoothest bikes, I was soooo close to getting a junk bike, a friend was suppose to bring it over but never did, it needed a good amount of parts and clean up, but still it would have been mine, then crap hit the fan, so I’ll never have my own, some time I wish someone would take me for a ride cause it’s something I never got to do, even though I shouldn’t.. the little guy is already wanting a scooter..

The latest BMW water cooled engine is a gem. I have done 106,000 kms on mine. The bike will be four years old next month... Replaced the tail shaft at 100,000 kms and that is it. The rest of the bike is flawless, and it get used for its intended purpose.

If you are ever in Oz I will happily take you for a ride  there is a lot to see here, and I believe on a bike you are much more part of the journey than in a car.

My son too wants to ride. He rides dirt bikes when we go to a mates farm. I think the younger they start the better equipped they will be for when they ride on the road. In saying that, I am also a firm believer in training. I do training every second year and will learn something each time. Our next "session" is in March next year with a group of good mates.

Cheers,
Pete

Oh, anything you start early your better at latter, I mean if I was into it then it’s something I would have started them early. The little guys 14 and only wants to go scooter, I’ve been on a scooter, when I was young my father had an old Vespa and I could stand on the platform and he could hold my hands on the handles, of course we’re talking 35yrs ago and I don’t remember squat,
I’ve always loved bikes but just never got to it so it’s in my bucket list to do it.. along with somehow getting the Mrs around the US via camper.. I just can’t do it because of my medical..

Although I don't own a motorcycle anymore(except for a vintage Dandy pocket bike) I do a fair amount of custom painting on them. Not full paint jobs anymore but rather just pinstriping and lettering. Stopped riding in 1974 after a good friend I was riding with died as the result of injuries he suffered from hitting a house.Long story.
Here is a couple of pics of some of the work I've done along with a pic of me riding the pocket bike. Haven't done that in several years either due to my legs refusing to bend enough.

First two pics are fairings I've striped. The third pic is a 350hp Hayabusa Fourth pic is a 1928 Harley JD that competed in the Motorcycle Cannonball in 2012. Over 3,000 miles from Newberg New York to San Francisco California in 14 days. He came in 11th overall out of 71 bikes.

A couple more.
First pic I did was for a charity event to raise money for autism awareness. My good friend Dan Crawford assembled this from pieces he had laying around his shop and the I painted it to look like a jigsaw puzzle.
Second was a really nice blue Metalflaked Harley.Wound up doing it twice as it got wrecked shortly after I painted it.
Third is a bike I striped and lettered at a show.
Last is yours truly riding the Dandy pocket bike.Thing would do nearly 40 mph with my 250 lb. posterior on it.
