How do I cut an Opinel blade?
on: July 23, 2015, 12:18:20 AM
I'm currently working on modding an Opinel. What I'm looking for is a quicker way to mod the blade to sheepsfoot style, rather than grinding it down on a sharpening stone,as I did with my damaged DAK.

I'm starting from the safety/butter knife blade, rather than the standard profile.

I don't have the option of any powertool bigger than a Dremel.

Any ideas?

There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

With Dremel you can use #409 cutting discs to cut the blade (cooling it in water). You are using #7 "My first Opinel" ?

Yep as Michel says the Dremel will work well
Use the knife in a tub of water method  ;)
Everything’s adjustable

Get the fibre-reinforced wheels if you can - I use the EZ lock 456 quick change ones - as they're much tougher and less likely to shatter than the 409s.

They are safer but also thicker and need more power.

I used a coarse file to reprofile my No.7 to a spear point - took 25-30 mins (without a tea break!) so it shouldn't take much more time to sheepsfoot it.

If you go the file route, make sure you use a Baaaaco.

Don´t you think it may be worth to spend 20-30 bucks for a small bench grinder from the homedepot?

They are not that great as a professional one, but still ..... having any grinder at hand is better than having no grinder.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

Would be if I had a bench to mount it on :D

And if I did,a pillar drill would be the first thing I'd be looking at >:D

If it is mounted on a piece of wood/plank instead of being fixed on a bench, it´s much more versatile.

And you can carry it outside to don´t have the grinding dirt in the house.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

If I have to take off more than a cm of material I use a dremel cutting disk, any less, just a belt grinder.
