Victorinox Grand Prix Tang Question
on: July 30, 2015, 06:16:57 PM
I just bought a Victorinox Grand Prix. The main blade only has a tang stamp on one side.

My question is, is this normal for an older Grand Prix? I'm wondering if someone took a blade from another knife and put it in.

Hoping I did not get ripped off.

Thanks for any help!!! ???

It's real - very unlikely that you got ripped off. Most likely is that this knife was made around either 73 or 75. These are the times when Victorinox (for whatever reason) decided to only stamp the front of the blade. They only did it for a short time and then went back to stamping both sides of the blade. Show the rest of the knife (tools fanned) and I can tell you if this is the case and when the knife was made.

Another possibility is that this is a later model Grand Prix that someone just forgot to stamp the back of the blade at the factory. Victorinox has a very low rate of errors like this, but once in a while they happen.

Yes, this is a mid 1970s Grand Prix, probably made sometime around 1975-1976. Blank tang stamps in this time period are pretty common - I have a Mountaineer, Explorer and Champion all with the same stamp on their blade. Great knife.

Great! Thanks.

I paid $55 USD for it. Is this a pretty good deal? I saw others that were not as nice for $70-$85.

I also forgot to mention, it came with the metal tweezers not the stainless with plastic end.

I think I have the same model, no tang stamp on the back, modern, post-73 small blade, square phillips with can key, tapered reamer, pre-78 aluminum head tweezers. Unfortunately I found it without the original automobile scales, but with some restoration and new silvertech scalest it turned out nicely anyway.

Missing tang stamps are always awesome, due to being uncommon.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I guess I should have included pics of the tang as well, since that was the original point, so here they are.  :)

Older thread, I know, but I thought I'd add my voice to the record, too.  I have an older Grand Prix, which I bought mint-in-box NOS, and it is missing the obverse tang stamp as well.  Just the VSSR on the front, and nothing on the back.  Aluminum tweezer head, slotted square Phillips head.  I'll post some pictures if anyone is interested.
