So, I will answer Huntsmans question now: No, they did not all guess the same item on day 2.
Yesterday, only one person had one item right.

item 1) This is a difficult one
item 2) Guessed twice
item 3) Guessed once
item 4) Guessed once
item 5) ???
:woohoo: we have it together, in theory

AND TODAYS HINT:
The item that is still in the 1988 kit, has not yet been guessed

Tomorrow morning I will give the last hint, with which I believe it should be possible to solve the riddle (always easy to say if one knows the answer). And on Friday I will announce a winner, by whatever method is appropriate at this stage. By then I should also have the items together and a nice photo of the kit :D

:woohoo: Great success on Day 4
- The 1988 item got guessed
- One contestant achieved a double hit, including the 1988 item
- One contestant achieved a single hit

Note: I'm fairly specific with the items, but that is not the problem here.

A bit of a change in the rules
Tomorrow, everybody who has 3 right items in his guess (I'm still optimistic) has a chance at winning, not just the first, mainly because we are a global community and it would be unfair for those who post later.
Also if no-one has 3 right, I will draw from those people who had one or two right in one guess with some weighting (5 points for a double hit, 3 points for a first hit, 1 point for a hit). Sounds complicated? Don't make too much of it, it does not reflect my personality ::)

TODAYS HINT
Todays hint is not as straight forward as on other days, but with this you should be able to solve this.
There is something odd about the container (the cloth bag) :ahhh

A Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle Compensated Matter Transporter
A valiant guess as the Uncertainity Principle has been around since 1927. However, it was only introduced at Elementary School level in 1957, so kids 1956 would have been unfit to operate the Matter Transporter. Although I'm sure the author of the guidebook was pretty miffed when he found out that he had published prematurely...

Ham usually gets a canvas bag doesn't it?

3 Generations
The latest version the emergency kit is changed to a first-aid kit. The whole book has a stronger focus on recognizing danger like weather and avoiding it. Its also more about what to do until the professionals arrive (and which professional should you call, yeah in Switzerland you have pretty much everywhere cell reception, even the mountains).

And such lovely knives to choose as a prize from

Have long since lost track of the lists (getting old and senile).

So decided to include a shot of my own 'Junior Woodchuck' manual.

A Boy Scout manual from 1960, along with a Pioneering merit badge manual.

I still use the check list in it, along with an old Rand-MacNally check list, before heading out on a trip. Haven't forgotten anything major (so far).

Probably full of mistakes but I don't have the time to double check it.

Day one: nothing guessed from day one.
Day two: 2 or 3 items from day two.
Day three: either 1 new item or 1 item from day two.
Day four: 1 new item plus 1 or 2 items from day two or three depending.

item one, from 1988 list: rubber bands, thin wire, phone money
item two, can only have one of these on the list: chocolate, rope, bread, towel, blanket, teddy bear
item three: one of any guessed once on day two
item four: one of any guessed once on day two or three but which day depends on item two
item five, difficult: probably not guessed yet

for the record I think finding out the list will be a prize in itself

Absolutely styx
This is real Agatha Christie style sleuthing work.

You really have organised a great challenge for us here Mr. E.
I love the subject matter: ie Survival, outdoors, expoloring etc etc
I love the history of these little books in Switzerland
And I love this detective work!

My (and all ours) low point was day 3 - We all only got one right between us - But day 4 onwards you could start to work stuff out.
I reckon I have worked out a lot - But not enough to nail it - There are still options!!
Ah just read Zoidy's post - Very close to where I am at!! Oh and more posts .... and more posts ... oh and more posts
I cannot spend any more time on this - I have work to do!!!

We had a great text book for outdooresey stuff in the UK - I think it was called Mountaincraft and Leadership.
Maybe came out in the 80s - A must for all outdoor adverturers.

@ Colowisss - Come on have a guess - Even if you stand down from the prize!!

@ Tazzie Rob - I like your logic on the bag - So will steal it - But slightly alter the guess.

And I think there is too much food in my guess
- Oh well here goes...

50ft-trad - pocket knife, compass, refuse bag, candle, matches
styx - pocket knife, matches, sting, compass, canteen
Toolslinger - pocket knife, compass, matches, handkerchief, pot

I wish I hadn't put socks now, I don't think it is correct.  I'd like to think I'm in the ballpark for the other four though  :pok:
