Gopro fail
on: August 10, 2015, 08:59:27 PM
I decided it might be nice to record my kayak adventures from a different angle so I rigged up a 2L ginger ale bottle with some candle wax and fishing weights and a Gopro mount.  The plan was to tow it behind the boat using 50 pound test line and film us kayaking from a "chas boat."

Well, due to a trim problem  (apparently Hero2 cameras are not balanced properly) the camera sat on an odd angle, and when pulled behind the boat, slid lower in the water until it was under the water.

Still, the few bits of video taken above the surface had potential so I will continue trying to find a way to make it work.  I think I just need a better way to float it.  I'm thinking cheap toy boat.

I was going to suggest that. I think it is your cheapest, easiest, and a very effective option.

You need a large bath duck:

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Not sure if I have the right term.....keel weight? And maybe a little fin on the underside?

I done 1000's of hours on my kayak fishing still waters, so you row where you wanna go, and dragging much more than a rope behind the boat is a......drag....

If thought about a catamaran with two smaller bottles but decided to try this first as I thought it would be self righting.   In waves a catamaran could get flipped and it would stay upside down.  A single hull could right itself if properly weighted.

Yes I certainly knew this was behind me,  that's for sure, but the drag wasn't unreasonable, at least for the short trip we made.   I had thought about a fun as well and I think it would have helped a lot.

Keel weight is a huge factor here, especially as it is inside the bottle and closet to the center of rotation, while the Gopro is outside the bottle and further away from the center of rotation meaning there is a serious leverage issue working against me.   The bottle with wax and weights is actually quite heavy to compensate for the Gopro on top.  Mind you I also went with the worst case scenario and also had the extended battery on the camera.  It might have performed better with no add on components.

This, plus she would look good in a skin right wet suit.
