Wenger RangerGrip 78 (lots of pics)
on: December 08, 2011, 03:35:32 PM
I was just heading out the door to work and this beauty arrived.   I had to take some pics and post before I left.   This is WAY nicer than the vic one hand trekker I had before.  I ended up sending that back.  This wenger I can actually open with one hand.   I LOVE the lock mechanism, pushing in the swiss symbol releases the liner lock.

I was a total vic snob, and still prefer vics for the standard models, but for the trekker/ranger the Wenger takes it.  In my opinion, bigger badder and cooler.

That is a great knife. I tend to like the larger Wengers to the Victorinox knives myself.
A little Leatherman information.

I Love the larger sized Wengers too. I have had my eye on the NewRanger 71 for some time now.

I did really like my 78 but the fact I found it tricky to open left handed was a bit of a PITA. :-\  So right handed people should buy Wenger, and left handers should buy Vics. ;)

Totally agree with that.  I found it hard to work the vic lock right handed.

I just wanted to add this short vid.  When I was looking at these a few other people said that the wenger was still hard to OHO.  I wanted to show that it does indeed OHO just fine.

I really like this knife! :D

Cool video  :tu:
BUT I think it will be hard to people who have small-ish hands to OHO it

The only thing I do not like about the Rangers is the feeling that the handles are "empty". They could have put some more tools in them or made them slimmer.

Yep, I agree on that.  My intent is to actually do custom scales that are thinner.  Metal for sure, but I haven't settled on the material.

I popped of the scales to see what's underneath, I can't seem to leave things alone.  I noticed there is the hex bit hole in the liner that other models use.  I guess they just reuse the same liners?  I may as well cut a hole for that in the new scales as well.

Cheers!

I wonder if the liner is a carry over from the Swissgrip   8) 8)

The current models with the hex hole are the Mike Horn and the Alinghi SUI1.  Both pricey knives.  I guess I'm making a DIY version of a fancier knife option.  It does make me wonder if all the rangers have that hidden inside.

Just a quick update to this.  I had used the rangergrip quite a small amount off and on and I gotta say the rubberized evo grip style sucks.  It started flaking and peeling around where the button lock action is.  I gave up on trying to smooth it out and just put on regular black plastic scales from a different knife.   I dont know if this is typical, but I dont think id pick another one with that grip style.

Dude I have de same problem (see this link http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,26315.msg471220.html#msg471220)    the solution: send the knife back to the factory and changed the handles, and take several months and have not presented problems.
