Old German pocket knives / MT
on: August 19, 2015, 07:31:24 PM
As some of you know, battle reenactment is my true hobby, and I often reenact as a red army soldier of WWII or Chinese Nationalist soldier of 1930s. I don't know much about the cutlery of that period so I am asking for help. My goal is to have a German pocket knife / MT when I am in the field.
A current production of a historic model would be ideal to save cost.

Mercator K55K is a fine choice and I already have two.
Mercator Multi seen great but it costs about the same as a Charge TTi  :o

What other options do I have?
Thanks.

You might look for an old Boker Scout knife....here's mine from the late 70's - early 80's.

Löwenmesser and Otter Messer are two German manufacturers of classic working patterns. (I guess you know of Otter since you mention the Mercator.)

Otter Messer knife shop, work knives:  http://www.otter-messer.de/shop/Pocket-Knives/Work-Pocket-Knives---45_37.html

A webshop with international shipping and good selection of Löwenmesser: http://www.scharferladen.de/shop/KNIVES-SHOP-TOOLS/Loewenmesser-Solingen:::22_225.html

Löwenmesser are roughly finished, but work well.

Böker and Hartkopf both produce the classic scout pattern in Germany, but those knives are pricey.  They might have something relevant, though. Klaas also make classic patterns. The shop I linked above has all of these.

How about this Hubertus electrician's knife?

I think that one might suit your purpose well. Do note: It's a nailbreaker and you will have clean it, but that's authentic too, I guess. ;) And yes, made in Germany as well.

That Hubertus electrician's knife looks great, what year did it enter production?

Frankly, I have no idea, but the pattern is from the 1800s, I would presume, and bakelite was widely used in the 1930s. (I think the scales are bakelite.)

All the "classic" patterns pre-date WWII, so cutlery correct for the era is really easy. Just avoid modern plastics and choose a classic pattern and you're good to go.

Here's an old Boker my Dad picked up in Germany when he was stationed there right after WWII; and a current version of it (pricey).

Hope I am not too late to this thread.  During 1930s, China was in the midst of anti-Japanese invasion war.  One of iconic cold weapons is the 'Da dao', which is used to behead or fight with samurai sword in close distance.  As shown in the pictures in following thread:

Put one of these bad boy on, I am sure you won't be mistaken but an authentic Chinese red army soldier.

In fact, Cold steel actually make a replica, probably based on this weapon:

I did not knew you were into reenactment, that is really cool!!! I wish I could help you more but I'm no where near as knoledgeable as most of the fellows that already replyed. The closest thing to help I can offer, is for you to check Stefan Schmalhaus channel, he's got great videos of knives from that time (I think).

Please tell us what you end up getting.

I have an original DaDao from 1937 along with original DaDao training manual of 29th army.
I am pretty good with it.
