Why elaborate paracord lanyards?
on: August 11, 2008, 10:28:33 PM
I understand the benefits of both lanyards and some good rope, but I am not sure I understand why people like those complex paracord lanyards I see so often.

You can't wrap most of them around your wrist or neck, and it doesn't seem like an overly complicated way to store some rope.

Could someone please enlighten me? And yes, I immediately noticed that it looks cool... :)

But why not make it in a loop so you can wrap it around your hand too?

Good question, some people do make both in one lanyard. I don't like hugely long lanyards on my tools as it gets in the way when using it (especially driving screws) so a short "elaborate" one is better as it can't get tangled up in the tool during use :)

A small rope or string would work fine for lanyards but learning to tie some more elaborate ones is a fun hobby.
Here are some that I have learned to tie

For you guys who are interested in learning you have to check out Stormdranes site. He is a member here and a wealth of information.

I've started trying my hand at lanyards, it's quite addictive!

In reply to the OP, I've knocked together quite a few now, some have wrist-loops like this one:

.. that's currently attached to a Maglite, and I made a black and yellow version of the above for the SAK. I've also made a couple of bracelets for my daughter, and various other variations. I use the one that Ryan made (like the one in Mike's pic) with a Mini-Mag. The torch lives in a pocket in my bag, whilst the lanyard hangs outside, so I can just pull it out without having to root round. I have one on a LM Micra with a lobster clasp which I can hook onto my belt loop on jeans, so the Micra hangs in my pocket away from coins / keys etc. Much easier than fumbling aroud.

Whilst you set out to make something functional, it is fun to create them!

I used to come here a lot.

Alot of fun to learn how to make, and very useful should you need some cord when outdoors.

they make a good handle for the handle of something else. i have a short one on my coast led lenser that makes it easier to use in a slightly "tactical" way.
