Super Cadet (mod with Wenger scissors)
on: August 12, 2015, 08:50:25 PM
I've had this mod for a while now, but never put up a thread for it.  Did manage to take some current pics though ;)

I found a Vic Salesman on ebay and was thrilled to find an 84mm with scissors.  When it showed up however, the scissors were in bad shape, and it looked like some tried to sharpen them, and failed.
But it made me not feel so bad tearing it apart.  I took out the scissor layer and made a refurbished Small Tinker.  I then took the scissors backspring, and with just a little filing, paired with Wenger scissors (again pulled from a salvage find on ebay).  Got the idea from a PTRSAK tutorial :tu:  (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,41486.0.html)

It was either my first or second alox mod, so the peening was a bit rough on the scales.  And the backspring aren't perfectly flush with one another, but still pretty good.

And the left over Small Tinker:

Thanks!  There's a bit of a learning curve with peening and preserving the Alox, but there are a few tutorials here (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,43303.0.html) with tips.  I'd recommend starting with celidor mods first (preferably cheap, beat up ones to practice on) since the scales can cover up the peening if needed.  But other than that, you should definitely give it a shot.  I don't really have a shop or a ton of tools to speak of, and it was still pretty easy to jump into.

What tools would I need, and where did you get your pivot rods? Think I may

Thanks all!   :salute:

For starters, I'd say you'd want a drill (with small bits, around the 2mm area), file, ball peen hammer, and a vice and/or drill press are very helpful (though you could make do without them if you had to).  This is a good intro to modding thread, showing how to disassemble/assemble, and what tools to use:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,9808.0.html

As for the brass rods, for starters, I just bought larger SAKs (4+ layers) and used the leftover pins for making smaller SAKs (2+ layers, you lose some length when disassembling).  After the first couple, I started buying K&S 2.5mm brass rod for the end pins (a few online sellers had it), but the 2.2mm for the middle pins is hard to come by in the US (these pin sizes are for 91mm).  So you're left asking for help from overseas folks, or sanding/filing some 3/32 or maybe 2.5mm rod down to size.  I'd heard there might be an online seller who'd sell 2.2mm and ship to the US, but I'll have to look that one up.

Superb! I'd say the only thing missing is replacing the nail file with a small blade :)

Thanks! That would be a logical choice if/when I make a second one, and call it a Super Cadet II :)

I've unintentionally found myself with an 85mm Wenger with scissors...   No cadet yet though

Don't worry, you'll unintentionally come up with one of those soon enough ;)

That's what I'm afraid of. 2 $10 amazon cards showed up in the mail today for a health survey I took last time I was at the doctor...

That makes for a nice compact tool setup with the scissors!  Nice work!   :tu:

Congrats, eddie!  Nice job.

I'm still working on my peening with Cellidor models before attacking the used Cadets I've stashed away.  Getting the tension right is a small challenge...just took apart an 84Golfer that I had over-peened when cleaning it up and changing the corkscrew out and putting in a phillips.
