Lubricating multi tools
on: August 30, 2015, 04:36:32 PM
I always oil my multi tool with cooking oil because it is use to cut fruit, fish etc. I eat my bone stick with Gerber 400. Bone stick is common in my county. So cooking oil is the most safe oil to lubricate my multi tool. what you guys think?

For cleaning multis i use wd-40. For lubricating them i use CRC gun oil. I have deticated knife for food usually with me, so multitool lubricant is what i have. Deticated knife usually does not have any lubricant. If it has, i keep blade washed and clean, so lubricant stays only in pivot.

I have been looking for Ballistol oil. I have read good rewiews of it, and it is supposed to be used in about everything. Does anyone here use Ballistol universal oil? I would love to hear user experiences of it...

I have a SAK that sees food use and that gets a drop of mineral oil only on the pivots.  When I feel it needs cleaning then I wash with soap and water, scales removed, and dried then re-lubed with mineral oil.  I use Alox also for food which IMO is less "work" to clean.

My MT's and other non food use tools get a WD40 cleaning then 3and1 oil.  I have some 1095 fixed blades for camping that I've treated with frog lube but I think they'll need a second application and further testing to see how well this stuff works.

Mineral oil for all knives used with food, and also other knives that are used frequently. Like SteveC said, won't go rancid like vegetable oil (yuck!).

One drop of Liquid Wrench Super Oil in pivots on my Leatherman's and other folders that are not used for food.

Marine Tuf-Cloth for wiping down carbon steel fixed blades for knives that are rarely or never used (never use with food). This is not an oil, but has a bonding agent. So it won't easily come off once dry if you handle the blade.

I have good experiences with Ballistol. I think I have some ballistool drenchesd cotton swabs which were giveaways with other purchases. If I find them, I´ll put them in an envelope and send them over, if you like?!

Thank you for offer. I do not have use for wipes, so i will pass your offer.

How is the smell on Ballistol? Neutral, or noticeable? I do not like smell of CRC gun oil, it is noticeable.

I use a drop of 3-in-1 oil on the pivots of my multitools.  I clean them hot water and soap (sometimes WD-40 if I buy them used in bad condition.)
