More like about 31". I have an 800mm Hickory handle to replace the original (I'm assuming original from the factory) Spotted gum handle that is dry, split, and full of borer worm holes.

Worth a shot at guessing the length. Safe to say you like axes

Cut the old handle off, now to decide which of these two hickory handles to use...

In my experience two tone handles break where the colour changes.
The thickness can be matched with a little bit of work.
And I also prefer less palm swell. (yeah, there you go pfr)

Having said that most handles will last for many years if looked after.
Might as well go with the one that appeals to you.

That's interesting, I didn't know that about colour changes being a weakness. Past I've seen for these two axes is the weakest spot is the transition from the top of the handle to the eye, where it sweeps up and the end grain is exposed. In my opinion, these were the best of the 4 or so choices from each store. None of the gum handles were satisfactory for the 800mm choices

Ultimately though, you know what it means? I have two handles and one head, so there's something missing!  :D

Current line up of axes not including the 2.5lb Sater Banko Swedish axe I got at the weekend.
I'm thinking my older original Hytest will be more of a splitting axe due to the thicker edge, and the newer (possibly older than my first one) will be a better chopper as it has a thinner profile
