In my experience two tone handles break where the colour changes.
The thickness can be matched with a little bit of work.
And I also prefer less palm swell. (yeah, there you go pfr)

Having said that most handles will last for many years if looked after.
Might as well go with the one that appeals to you.

That's interesting, I didn't know that about colour changes being a weakness.
Possibly a transition from heartwood to sapwood, which have differing characteristics.

Guess it depends on the wood. In some woods the colours can come from minerals drawn up by the tree as it grows, and can be embedded deeper than the sap wood. Over strike seems to be the ultimate worst enemy of the axe handle

I saw a Hytest axe in a shop today with a completely polished head and a hickory handle. That and a Plumb. Bloke wanted $150 EACH for em!  :o :o :o

Been playing in the shed again. Got another Hytest head and it's going on one of the hickory handles I had. Fair bit of thinning, have taken a couple of mm off each side. The angle grinder with a flap disc makes short work of the bulk, but makes a hell of a mess!

If I thin out the grind a bit, then yes. At the moment it is fairly similar to my first one. The other head I have looks like it could be an even better chopper.

More like about 31". I have an 800mm Hickory handle to replace the original (I'm assuming original from the factory) Spotted gum handle that is dry, split, and full of borer worm holes.
