Those things are clunky and bad

Seek in Google-images: mini crank flashlight
Had one of these... IMHO utter garbage :td:
They do seem to be lacking some basic features I would like to see in a survival situation. They seem plastic, bulky, most likely with a fairly bad LED and not waterproof.

They also age poorly, mine couldn't keep a charge after half a year and only worked when there was sun or when you were cranking (and that is noisy).
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

My issue with flashlights as a survival tool is the old adage that a flashlight is merely a place to store dead batteries.

Unless you have some method of preserving or recharging the batteries on a regular basis,  a flashlight is, at best, a short term solution.

Absolutely true, at the same time most survival situations are probably over within three days or so and rarely do they last a fortnight. Used sparsely and not at full power a full charge should give you plenty of time for signaling and such.

Speaking of extra batteries though, does anyone have a source for watertight battery holders? I just want to be able to bring one or two extra AAs
but most I see are for around 6 batteries and usually for 18650s and the like.

I have one for the CR123 and they are excellent (but expensive).

I'm getting a couple for the Fenixes....
