Alox color durability?
on: September 20, 2015, 10:18:43 PM
How durable is the color on Alox knives?

I just bought a Red Alox Minichamp. I have seen some alox scales where the color is wearing off. This Minichamp is more for collecting than daily use, but I don't want to have an issue with the color if I do carry it occationally.  ???

It is not so good. I like the worn look so it is a non issue for me.

Had this one about a year and you can already see some wear. It has a pocketbook so it avoids a lot of pocket wear.

Thanks for the info.

I'm suprised they don't wear better! Kinda though it should not wear off at all.

Am I going crazy because I think they take wear fairly well. I mean if that's a picture of your alox after a year I would say it looks damn good.

The older ALOX wore better IMO.....the newer ones wear quicker. I have a Pioneer I bought in '83 that was carried almost daily for about 20 years and it looks like some newer examples (viewed in forums) that folks have had for 2-4 years. Lots of variables come into play like actual use and things carried in the pocket with the knife. Mine was used a lot but was carried in a watch pocket so it didn't rub on coins/keys.

I was kind of afraid to post a picture of mine. In my work uniform and most of my shorts it has its own pocket plus it is part of a rotation that only sees carry once a week or so. Not a good representation of wear.

Also I am not saying they are garbage just show wear a lot faster then anything else I own that is anodized.

The silver alox ones will show the least wear, as the coating matches the colour of the aluminium underneath.

There are small sheaths that you can carry your minichamp in as well you can probably make one.  If this knife will see only occasional usage then just make sure to not have anything else in the pocket you carry it in.

I also love the look of a well used Alox knife.

Yes. Pulled it out of my showcase, used it and was sold......it was in my truck toolbox out in West Texas when all my other SAKs met their demise at the farm.

My black Pioneer also showed wear more quickly than I'd like it to. Not that it doesn't look good :D

The blue pioneer in my avatar had about four years of EDC wear on it when I took the photo. I think they wear fairly quickly but I don't mind the patina they pick up

I love it when they've been knocked about a bit and show signs of use.  Mine sit in my pocket with my keys and a light so it doesn't take long for them to develop some patina.

Are the scales just painted or anodized? I am assuming it's just paint. Anodizing would be too expensive.

Since they are not HAIII hard anodized, they tend to wear more quickly than a lot of anodized gear like flashlights (though maybe a Maglite is a good comparison, as I don't believe they are hard anodized either).

Attached is my black pioneer after about two years of daily carry.  Usually in the watch pocket of my jeans by itself, but occasionally with keys when wearing shorts or khakis (which is what caused almost all the wear).

I don't have a pic handy, but my EDC black alox classic that is on my keychain has worn even more heavily.

Granted, I don't think it looks bad, but it certainly isn't the most durable finish.

Yeah, it's not very durable.

Here is my pioneer after 5 months of use. Although this does include my 2 year old throwing it onto gravel a couple of times... but it had a few marks from general use too. I keep it in a belt pouch so this is not pocket wear.

Really surprised  that they don't wear better. I'll have to be careful with my minichamp!

The Swiss military originally had red alox knives (1961-65), but switched to silver alox because of durability issues.

I found out that if you keep alox away from other metals in the pocket and prevent it from dropping on concrete or tiles, it should wear evenly like a quality pair of jeans. Any wounds made by impact will not leave a nice look

We should start a thread to show off your Alox patinas.

I think this is a good idea Harley :tu:  My MechaRogue is beginning to develop some wear on the scales.  I haven't been able to capture it well in pics yet though.
