I gave away both of my MP400s
on: August 25, 2015, 06:37:54 AM
I got two of them in a trade. Gave one to my 11 year old son as his first pliers-based MT.

Just yesterday, I gave the other one to my mom to put in the glove box in her car. She tried to refuse it, asked me for it for her birthday. Then she said she'll hide it somewhere at home where my brother can't find it, hahaha. She's convinced he steals her tools. Usually, she has misplaced them, not him.

I think I'm going to make a habit out of gifting MP400. It feels so good !

I wish I had a MP400 when I was 11!

(All I got was a Victorinox Classic for Boy Scouts)

There are so many lessons to be learned when you get a tool like that at an early age. It sort of fine-tunes your senses as you get older to find practical solutions to everyday problems with limited resources (or at least that's what I learned).

And at least you gave him a quality tool - could have been a Suspension!  :D

I'm down THREE, now that my niece buried my Dime Travel at the beach!

Leatherman makes a travel-friendly one; I might give that a whirl some time. Oh, and I do have a bladeless MP600 waiting for me at home.

Seriously though, it's time to start getting rid of the ones I don't consider favorites and start giving more carry time to the ones I do like best.

...and I've got another one incoming. Traded my MP600 BN for another MP400.

Have an MP600 bladeless waiting at home too.

Yikes, I'm sick, aren't I?  :-\

Yes, we all are. It ok. I have a love-hate relationship with the flik. I've returned one, gave one away, and sold the last one I have. I'm sure I'll get another one in time

Should have put the blunt nose head on the bladeless handles.

Got another MP400 inbound from Detron, and my MP600 BN is going out to him soon.

MP400 is the sweetie of the Gerber line-up, IMO.

I recently handled an MP450 at WalMart and now I see why people are into this line of tools. I don't have a lot of experience with Gerber MTs (all I have is a Dime) but the one I fondled made a pretty good impression. Unfortunately it was $46 and a display model... Plus I believe I'd like the 400 better than the 450, if I'm right in thinking the difference is scissors. I needs me some scissors  :tu:

Maybe I'll run into somebody as generous as Smaug to give me one for no good reason  :D

It really is. I'm considering giving a tool to one of my friends for Christmas or something since he just has some generic tool that looks like a shortened PST.

The MP 400 is $26 on amazon shipped (if you have Prime).  A pretty good price!  I am debating picking one up.

The Dime looks cool but I think it would really give the wrong impression about Gerber quality.  The MP line are workhorses, no doubt.  Great great tools.

Indeed, I would pick one up at that price, but right now my tool budget is going toward Christmas gifts for friends and family. If they're still reasonable after the holiday season I will almost certainly grab one.
As for the Dime, I have a love/hate relationship with that thing. I like the form factor, and the great bottle opener. Plus I'm a fan of the blade's shape. But the scissors are not very good (at least on mine) and the file is atrocious. Not to mention the poor fit and finish; it came out of the box extremely stiff and gritty, there's little consistency with the rivets, and the finish was scratched in a couple spots before I even opened it. After breaking it in, it's a functional if rough tool that I keep around as a backup I can stand to break or lose.
