Off Brand October
on: October 01, 2015, 08:00:27 AM
Morning of the first....

My profile for multitool use is like this; I carry a SAK every day and a Pliers based multitool is kept handy for my hobbies that are mostly outdoor based (Enduro motorcycles, fishing, camping, 4x4 etc)
I sometimes swap the SAK out for a minimalist multitool that fits the same light use profile. Opening bottles, cutting packages and tightening screws.
The CRKT ZillaTool Jnr should cover the light use day to day stuff; let's see.

First thing, give the blade a razor edge; easy with this cheap 2CR steel. I won't sharpen it again if I can get away with it; let's see how it hold up.

Good luck :tu:

The Zilla Jnr isn't a bad wee thing, but I'll be interested to see if the bits make it to the end intact
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Morning started out with a computer mouse that died, had to cut cable ties to free it.
The pliers cutters FAILED and just bent the plastic. Seems like there is space between the cutter jaws. Knife sorted it out though.

3rd October

This morning was spend on the bike riding out at a tribal trust land called De Wildt.
Hard enduro bashing the rocks.

Bike is well maintained and no work with tools was needed.
Out in rural Africa beer comes in 750ml returnable "quarts"
The Zillatool is let down in the opener game, this feels wrong and not decisive. Opening is getting better but nothing like a Skeletool, Octane or SAK.

Apre Ride refreshment

Home to braai some meat and watch rugby later, sorry Scotland.
I need some Charcoal

Wait the gas starter (yes I cheat) has a bad section of pipe.

Quickly chop it off with the blade.

Clamp off, on the better piece.

Lets start the fire !

The most the Zillatool did today was ride in the pocket.
This morning I went out for breakfast and some shopping and then spent the rest of the day next to the pool.
Cooked a traditional "potjiekos" and the Zillatool was never considered for food prep or can opening.
It carries well though, slim and light.

It's not a failure; just used better tools at home.

Come on man, at least I tried to open one can with a Squirt and I done it.

Try it once for us.

Grabbed the tool this morning and noticed I have lost both the bits!!!

I remember dropping the tool in the kitchen last night; yes they were both recovered from the tiles.
Both decided to eject themselves after a waist high fall onto the hard surface. I did not even notice and will be more vigilant now.

Not sure if I ever posted it, but during the "Classic Challenge" I tried to open a can with the Squirts main blade... and succeeded. The slightly thinner blade of the Classic cut through a bit better (no surprise) and both showed about the same amount of wear afterwards... Unlike the Classics scissors, the Squirts scissors on the other hand were not up for the task.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

After 7 days I will start trashing the tool.

So far today it decimated a box and bubble wrap to get at some Alox.

The knife blade has one option to open it, get it right and it's cool, miss the slight flick and flip and you have no thumb stud to finish the job off.

Hmmm Biltong !

Typical of decorative holes, check all the gunk in there; how am I going to get the fat out ?
And the blade is really taking strain already. It needs a sharpen.

Friday is dress down and the tool moved to the left pocket and the "off brand" knife slipped into the right.

The Zillatool sits better in the left than the right.

This morning I was playing Last Man Stands cricket.
I used the Zillatool to cut up my daughters burger.

Lovely views of Johannesburg while playing.

Needed to change an extension cord socket today; preparation for camping next weekend.
The Zillatool does this role like a champion; in fact I may even leave it in my toolbox when the challenge is over for this exact work.
Cut and stripped the wires perfectly.

Connected the wires up with the perfect sized driver.

I need to sharpen the knife; it's nothing like the knives I usually carry and I have to use force and a saw motion on the serrations. This tool could use a steel upgrade.

Office work and the Zillatool did not leave the pocket.
I broke my hand over the weekend and it now lives in my left pocket as my right is FUBAR.
No bikes or sports for 6-8 weeks

Ouch! Good luck with that!

Since you mention it, was the bike involved in getting your hand broken?

Office work and no use of the tool.
Packing for a camping trip this weekend; my wife is doing a mountain bike stage race and me and our kids going to support her. I think I'll abuse it this weekend; if it breaks I will carry something else but I'm getting used to it now.
Miss my SAKs

15th October to 19th October

This extended weekend was spent in the "Battlefields" region of Natal; I was support and chief babysitter for my wife who was riding in a Mountainbike stage race.

The Zillatool is a shocking camping implement. I stopped trying to use it after a day and it rode in the pocket while bigger knives did camp duty.
All it managed to do well was cut some cable ties on racing number-boards and irritate me by spilling the bits into the bottom of the pocket on two occasions.

Last two weeks of the challenge and its time to start the silly stuff.
This tool is not a camping implement but lets do some tough tasks with this baby.

The gratuitous fire making test.

Coghlans is a favourite brand in the cheap and cheerful; some of their things are part of my usual kit like the magnesium fire starter.
Scrape a nice pile of magnesium.

Cut some tinder; hard use on any knife and my Zillatool now has some serious side to side play.
Bearing down on this knife is comfortable but I think we should not overdo it. Knife is proper blunt now.

But it did the job...

Strike the ferro rod; add leaves and tinder, larger pieces of wood and happy days.

At least the tool uses good Torx screws; getting the blade play vs free movement of the flipper is the issue. Fine line.
