Douk-Douk restoration

A few weeks ago,50ft-trad very kindly sent me a warncliff style Douk-douk. He did say it was a bit on the rough side though...

My apologies for the poor photos. I started the project fairly late in the evening,and just grabbed shots before I started

There was a fair build up of gunk,and the beginnings of serious oxidation on the blade. The Douk spent 18 or so hours in vinegar

After a quick rinse in water,and a good rub down with WD40, we have this

Just a word of warning, John.... I did clean it up once, and the rust set in again with a vengance within a matter of hours.

That's peculiar, any reason why you think it will rust that quick?  I wonder if you polish the entire thing, will it slow down that rusting?

With Douk Douks, the patina prevents rust. That means you don't want to polish it and open it up, instead, you want a nice thin layer of patina that protects the metal. Polish = bare = prone to rust.

Not sure, I think it's more the steel's chemistry. I remember it took a patina incredibly fast when I first got it. This is one of those that you need to keep very clean and well oiled, and if you can get a decent blued patina on it, it might help a little in keeping the brown furry type at bay  ;)
