I've used the scissors from my Vics for years to trim my fingernails.An incident where I attempted to scratch an insect bite and accidentally cut my face after I had just trimmed my fingernails caused me to re-evaluate my grooming habits.My wife claimed that scissors leave the fingernails too sharp and this is what created the scratch.She suggested to do what she does and use an emery board to smooth the sharp edges of my nails.Yea sure,was my reply,I don't need no stinkin emery board.LOL.

I had to admit that my nails were able to leave a nasty scratch on my face after I used just the scissors to cut them.So I needed a way to smooth the ends of my finger nails after cutting them and hence the reason for this post.I concluded the "manly" solution to nail grooming would be to use a Vic with both scissors and a file and so I bought a Mountaineer.Problem solved and I maintained my manly dignity.LOL.

There is another Vic that contains the necessary tools for this grooming chore and I posted a picture of it with my new Mountaineer.The limited edition Marlboro [Marly] Trail Guide.The Mountaineer is in the foreground and is a four layer knife while the Marly is a bit smaller three layer model.

So what other Vics contain these two tools for fingernail grooming?

Dude, I didn't mean every knife Vic makes with these tools, just the knives that have the scissors and the file and very little if any more tools.

These are super precise and sharp, and leave a clean edge. I think Vic Delemont is making them now. This is an AT (air travel) version, but there are some options. The one I regularly use has only clippers, but I don't need nail maintenance but once a week or so (lucky I guess), so I don't need to EDC them. They really are excellent, highly recommend them, and manly too!

74mm. Nice option for the coin pocket too.

Occam's Razor. A simple Classic with nail cleaner tip instead of SD tip.
If the Classic is too dainty try an Ambassador.

With that said the second I read "Gentleman's knife" I thought of almost any of the 74mm line of SAKs. So an Ambassador or Executive. The file on my Executive is absolutely the best file on any Victorinox I've used.

Classic is hard to beat if you want very little else. I'm always amazed how much I can do with that little guy, but my favorite for your stated use is the Manager.

I have a Mountaineer too; the file is too aggressive for fingernail use, and the saw edge and mono-directionality of it means you have to be quite careful.

I have an Executive too; it's nail file is not aggressive enough, IMO. The one on the 58mm SAKs is perfect.

I use my keyring classic almost exclusively for nail maintenance. That way I tae care of any problem right when I notice the nails need attention, and the nail file on the classic smooths out the cut ends very well.

Yep, this is my recommendation as well.  I actually prefer the nail clippers to some of my dedicated ones.  My wife actually has a translucent purple one in her purse, but I stick with the standard red, ya know, the manly-er color

I have an Executive too; it's nail file is not aggressive enough, IMO. The one on the 58mm SAKs is perfect.

The key to using the file on the Mountaineer is to file in one direction only.If you attempt to file in both directions the finger nail seems to skip and even bounce off of the file.

With my Vic,if I start to file at the base of the file and draw the knife towards the tip of the file,it cuts very smoothly.

I have the Rambler, Manager & Executive as well as the Alox Cadet - all are pretty good IMO.
Of the 4 the Executive is probably the best one, but all will work well enough.

I know the Cadet doesn't have scissors, but if you keep your nails short you don't actually need scissors, you can just file off some excess nail to keep the length about right.  Of course if the nails are too long then scissors are handy to quickly remove excess length and then file to clean up.

When I'm working I have the Manager on my keyring and I have damaged a nail which I fixed as best I could with the scissors and file.  It left the nail very short, but at least it wasn't so sharp that it was catching on stuff.

+1 for the Wenger Clippers. Also, the True Utility Slimclips are an awesome addition to a key ring. They have a small file on the back, but it is next to worthless. Don't really need the file though since the clippers do a wonderful job.

I tend to have little slivers of nail coming off the side of my thumbnails and either sticking in me or catching on things. A nail files doesn't help, so I have to have some fairly precise scissors to take care of that. I do like to have access to a file too though.

The Executive/Director has the best nail file of the SAK's but I don't like the size of the tool - too large for keys, too small for seperate pocket carry. I keep a Vic Manager on my car keys which tends to take care of things, even if my "primary" pocket carried choice for the day can't handle it

A (-1) on the Wenger (now Victorinox) NailClip on the basis that the one I got new is not really strong enough to handle my nails - and particularly suffers on the bigger toenails.

A (+1) on a beard... harder to accidentally scratch oneself

Seriously; on my end, nothing has been able to beat the 91mm Vic scissors; and I can do without the nailfile - not sure if that is a result of technique or indifference to the nail result.

Wenger 85mm scissors hesitate but can do nearly as well; but overall it has the be the Vic... which is unfortunate as many Wenger 85mm models have both the scissors and the nailfile.

You get great scissors, great clippers, great file (just the right amount of aggression), great nail cleaner, tweezers for pulling thorns...

The Wenger Clipper sounded nice, but the atrocious Wenger scissors disqualify it... I saw what they do to paper... I'm not going to serrate my fingernails...

Vic's 91mm scissors and new file. Scissors speak for themselves. Despite the urban legend about its coarseness the "new" Victorinox file is an awesome nail file, gentle, of course, one has to use it with the finest sense and proper technique



SwissChamp or Vic's scissors and "old" file.

Old file is somewhat between Executive's and "new" file. Great tool.



"GeneraMajor" or Wenger's file with Vic's MiniChamp scissors.

MiniChamp speaks for itself. This Wenger's file is similar to old Vic's one. The distance between parallel teeth is a bit larger than Vic's, but the difference in coarseness is negligible. Great tool.

Nice selection C!  If I couldn't have my Wenger Clippers, I'd probably just use a SwissChamp, after all, it does everything else.
