Mall Ninja - And proud of it
on: October 03, 2015, 12:53:55 PM
My name is Corwyn and I am a Mall Ninja..
And proud of it  :D
I'm a middle-aged, overweight man, who never was in the army, rarely hikes, yet carries a ton of camo, tacticoolblack stuff as well as tons and tons of skulls...

Don't shy away... boast your ninja-ness, show your kit:

Two locking Spydercos with glowing skull bead lanyards
Skull prybar
Tritium Vial
Two flashlights with attack heads
Two cheapo tacticool China folders
Gerber Dime Tactical
Camo Vic Super Tinker
Two paracord bracelets.. one camo, one Bear Grylls colours with firestarter and whistle

German Army surplus Flecktarn shirt
Urban camo shorts
Camo cap with mesh
Urban camo hat

Stay tuned for the mall-ninja Grail... to arrive next week  :D

I've become too complacent to be a total mall ninja these days but my EDC bag is a Maxpedition Tactical Operator bag.... you know. ...  in case I need to transition quickly from the donut shop into a tactical operation.

Oh yeah, and my olive colored Jeep with heavy tires and Canadian Air Force markings.....  and folding tactical shovels under the seats.....

I think I'm the opposite of Mall Ninja.

Like... 'Safety Granny'?

Almost all of the gear I have is bright, preferably neon, colors.

Preferred SAK scale colors: Stay-Glo, then Red.
Preferred Paracord color: Blaze Orange.
I don't have a  'tactical vest'. I have a neon yellow safety vest with reflective tape.

Preferred Flashlight color: Red. (unfortunately, I still have a number of black ones, because sometimes that's all they ever come in)

And not a single Black Oxide coated Multitool in my collection.

Oh... wait... I DO carry a black Maxpedition fatboy slingbag. So...

Some of my gear is black. My CCW pistol is black. That's because other colors cost more, and resell for less (if I find out I don't like it later).

My bag is black because it actually stands out least in an urban area, I think.

I honestly don't think I have a single piece of camo clothing. My BDUs from my Air Force days are long gone, along with the f'ing brown t-shirts we had to wear under them. Combat boots are gone. Even he field jacket, a piece of gear i really liked, I ended up giving away to a homeless guy. He needed it WAY more than I did.

I don't have that sick 'coordinated pink' thing some women get. While I don't avoid pink with hostility, I just prefer Neon, yellow or orange preferably.

Why? I calculate that the odds of breaking down on the side of a road at night and very much WANTING to be clearly seen are a great deal higher than needing to Bug Out, and Hide from 'The Bad Guys' in the woods in stealth mode... at a likely ratio of something like a million to one.

Plus, i lost a camo colored flashlight in the woods once, and now I'm all gear-loss paranoid. :D

I'm the opposite of mall ninja. I'm a dad of two young kids and usually just go with what is practical, except that I have too many SAKs, RC trucks, and stereos.

I've even admitted to myself that I don't really need a one hand opening knife. I was in the army for a while, I'm over that; no need to pretend or blend in with anything. I'm kind of with Lynn on that count. I "need" to pick up a Stayglo Climber or something.

Oohh ooh me too! A surprising amount of my gear is molle friendly, yet, no molle straps to be found  Some tactical operator I am...

I pick all gear on a case by case basis, I'm a fan of tan, as well as black. I give off more of a woodsy vibe than ninja though, I'm afraid. Still, the BK5 must count for *something*  :D

Another non-mall ninja and proud here  :D

No molle, no camo clothing, no velcro areas for patches, no tacticool lanyards or bracelets, no military looking boots, lots of slipjoint knives and knifeless multitools, no monkey fist knots, no skulls.....

I specifically bought the smallest Maxped organiser as it was the only one without velcro

My largest and most rugged backpack is a Wynnster Conqueror 100, and it's olive drab, so I hardly ever use it

If I see something that looks useful and at the right price, but it's vaguely tacticool looking..... I buy something else instead  :D

Molle just doesn't work on any of the horse saddles.  It's important to be stylish.  Come to think of it.....there's not any malls or ninjas around anyway.

I cannot tell who is a mall ninja or legitimate ninja around my neck of the woods .  I live in a military town so lots of camo gear on a daily basis  :D.  I wear a camo boonie hat when working sometimes but no other camo for me.  Well actually I am completely camouflaged as I look like 99% of the other people walking around .

Have a few knives that probably fall in the 'mall-ninja' category. However my EDC is a Wenger Traveler.

For the rest:

No camo
No tactical equipment
No 'bug-out' bag
No nunchucks
No throwing stars
No skulls

I've become quite the opposite trying to carry the least load possible and absolutely no tactical stuff. I hate to carry double of anything and try to balance the perfect minimalistic setup for the day. It's almost a sport. If I carry two tools that contain f.ex. a saw I feel uncomfortable.

The problem with Harley here is that he is a seasoned operator and is no pretender.  :D

Likewise, I do not pretend to be a seasoned operator...thus am not allowed into the vaunted halls of Mall Ninjadome.

http://lonelymachines.org/mall-ninjas/

EDIT: meant no disrespect...its just that every-time I hear about Mall Ninja...I keep thinking about a Rambo version of Paul Blart.

IMO, I gotta appreciate the Mall Ninja types.  They obviously are going to be a little more prepared for life's everyday emergencies.  It's a head shaker when I'm out and about and I see some dude in shorts and flip flops trying to do something like open a package with his car keys, etc.

hmm,  I do not think of myself as a mall ninja,  however I could easily be classified as that and not be bothered by the name.

I am prior Military, with training on the M2 HB .50 Cal, Beretta M9, M14, M79, and Mossberg 500.  My job in the Navy was the Mk-86 5 inch gun fire control system that fires these
I also did Visit, Board, Search and Seizure for a while

I do have MOLLE bags, which I find useful.  Maxpedition gear is made well, and keeps my stuff dry even in the rain

I have mostly high visibility items, but I love camo and always have.

I always have paracord on me.

I wear Tactical pants because they are amazing and have the pockets I want, and are made well.  Not to mention they are water resistant
I wear Bates Enforce boots every day, they are very comfortable, and seem more well rounded than dress shoes.  Since I am on a Military base, no one seems to notice that I dress "Business tactical"

I carry tons of stuff every day, and enjoy doing that.  I use my MTs and SAKs all the time and feel good that I am self sufficient.

please let me know if I fit the name "mall ninja"  so I will know going forward.  at best I think I am a "strip-mall ninja"
If I can help, let me know
