Master Craftsman - Dating help
on: October 07, 2015, 07:28:18 PM
I would love some info on this knife. It is a Master Craftsman?

I find dating very interesting and this one has a halfstop, a sewing eye and a new fine driver. It also has a small "v" tang and a round backside Phillips with can key. So without referring to anything my guess is.....

late 1985? Or is my kung fu not improving?

In my mind this tang and those tools could only have only existed for a short period making this an interesting transition knife.

Or it could be just be all in my head......any opinions?

Is the scissors joint rivet or screw?  If it is rivet, then it may be after 92.  Most tool on this seems to be 85 and after.

I would say 1985 through 1990

Reamer has sewing eye
Scissor does not have groove
file does not have "V" pattern near end
Back fine screw driver has narrow shank
attachment is on liner not spring
and no hook
If I can help, let me know

Easy to miss the boulders when searching for pebbles.
I have made massive mistakes myself, so now I have a spreadsheet that I make selections one by one, and it narrows the range for me.

The tang stamp was discontinued in 85 from what I remember. At that point it went to a big "V". That was my first thought. So in my mind this guy must be made in late 85 or possibly early 86 as it seems to incorporate all the 1985 tool changes but also has the older tang.

great catch.  I did not notice that

that sure does bring it down to 1985-1986.  about as nailed down as you can get.

Screw scissors no groove.

Do you mean it is rivet?  I kinda compare this to my more modern SAK, I am guess it maybe 1992-2000, because of no rivets and thicker handle on scissors.

Thanks!  So it should be before 92.  And with the stamp looks like 1952-1986(four lines, C8 on Ulli stamp map), and incorporated many 85 changes...my vote goes to 85-86 too.

I'd date this as 1986.

The major dating elements here are:
- small "v", ends late 1986 (not 1985 as mentioned earlier)
- sewing eye in reamer, introduced late 1985
- new style fine screwdriver, introduced 1986
- No chisel on saw layer which started with intro of SwissChamp in 1986
- Half stop on the caplifter, introduced 1985

Lots of other things mentioned also help (keyring attachment, scissors with screw) but these are the main elements.

Screw scissors no groove.
Do you mean it is rivet?  I kinda compare this to my more modern SAK, I am guess it maybe 1992-2000, because of no rivets and thicker handle on scissors.

I think he means the groove for the spring to ride in. There is a lesser known variation of the scissors that was made from about 1990-1992 where the two parts of the scissors were joined by a screw (like the older scissors from 1978-1990), but there is a small groove in the handle of the scissors for the spring to ride in as they open and close. In 1992 the new riveted scissors are introduced and the groove is used on those as well, and is still there.

Thanks Jazz.

And yes I didn't notice that I was being unclear earlier. I mean screw pivot and no spring groove.

I have a pair of the scissors you describe and so I tend to think of scissors as:
Screw no groove
Screw groove
Silver rivet
Gold rivet

I would say 1952 - 1968  But that is just based on the tools alone, and not as precise as jazzbass could give.
think of this as the "Idiot Detron" guess.

I don't see anything. I think this knife deserves a SAKWIKI page. I think there is enough of them out there.
